Countryside coach Kaylyn Bayly perhaps best summed up her team’s performance in Game 1 against Sickles on Tuesday.
“It was terrible, really it was,” Bayly said. “We couldn’t control our passing and our serve-receive was pretty much nonexistent.”
The Gryphons took the first game but the Cougars shook off the slow start to win three straight for the 13-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-17 district victory. The Cougars, who lost six seniors from last year’s club, were led by Madison Truluck (15 kills) and Davi DiSalvatore (10 digs, three aces).
Lakewood d. Gibbs
The Spartans defeated the visiting Gladiators 25-6, 25-13 and 25-5 in both teams’ opening match of the season. Lakewood coach Sean O’Flannery pointed out the strong play of Taylor Whaley, Michelle Scannell and 6-foot-1 middle blocker Adaisha Rutledge.
“Rutledge played very well,” he said. “They were trying a lot of over-passes, and she redirected about 12 balls.”
Swimming
Girls: Boca Ciega 79, Gibbs 70
Boys: Gibbs 74, Boca Ciega 70
Boca Ciega’s girls team defeated Gibbs but the Gladiators’ boys team returned the favor against the Pirates at Walter Fuller Pool. Kim Brainard won both her individual events and was part of Bogie’s winning relay team. Justin Gaeta also swept his two individual events while helping the Pirates to a win in the relay, swimming butterfly. Bogie’s Matt Miller pulled out a victory in the 100-meter breaststroke, touching the wall just before the competition.

Northside Christian’s girls team beat Berkeley Prep at Feather Sound Country Club behind a match-low 34 from Mustang freshman Michelle Butler. Fellow freshman A.J. Volleyball
Canterbury 3, Lakeside Christian 0
The host Crusaders opened their season with a 25-10, 25-19, 26-24 district win. Canterbury's Abby Jay finished with seven kills and 14 assists while teammate Erika Whitman had 16 digs.
"Our goal is to finish with the top seed in the district, so ever one is important," Canterbury coach Dave Smith said. "We lost our top two players (Nora Brody and Laura Winkler) from last year's team and we have a lot of young kids."
Indian Rocks Christian 3, Tampa Catholic 1
The Eagles lost the opener but rallied for a 20-25, 25-19, 25-8, 25-20 win against the host Crusaders. Liz Schaner (11 kills) and Brianne Yeates (10) led the Eagles' offense while Kenzie Reynolds finished with 19 digs.
