Springstead and Nature Coast split in both teams' season-opening golf matches Tuesday at the World Woods Golf Club in Brooksville. The Eagles girls team slipped past the Sharks by a stroke while Nature Coast's boys team totaled 178 to Springstead's 183.
"It was the first match for us and we kind of got a little bloodied," Springstead boys coach Sonny Long said. "But considering it was our first match, there was only a five-stroke difference, so that's not all that bad."
Anthony Rule and Dane Dukes each shot 43 to lead Nature Coast but Springstead's Kevin Hubbard had the round of the day, firing 37 to earn low medalist.
"Kevin was hot today," Long said. "We have a nice 1-2 combo, but we have to get the rest of our younger guys going," Long said. "We've got some work to do."
The Eagles' Desiray Dipiano carded the low round on the girls' side, shooting 56 while teammate Jennifer Carl finished with 58. Alex Mahon and Danielle Autexier (58) led the way for Nature Coast.

Zephyrhills 3, Hernando 0
The Bulldogs won their first match of the season, defeating visiting Hernando 25-22, 25-11, 25-23.
Although Zephyrhills lost just one senior from last year's 22-7 team, coach Tiffany Bibby has shuffled her lineup this season.
"It's a matter of feeling each other out right now," Bibby said. "Even though these girls have played together a lot, some of them are in unfamiliar places and that will take some getting used to for them."
Megan Gonzalez, a junior, is one of the Bulldogs settling into a new slot. Gonzalez played libero for the first time against Hernando and drew praise from Bibby.
"For her first game, she was awesome," Bibby said. "She took charge of the defense."
Bibby also pointed out sophomore Lindsay Arnold, who is adjusting to her new role as setter.
"The setter is the quarterback of the team out there," Bibby said. "Lindsay came to me and wanted to know what she could do to get more playing time, and she worked her butt off over the summer to make this happen."
