Guardian ad litem training in september

The Guardian ad Litem Program will offer training for new volunteers from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 6, 7, 13 and 14 at the Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St. Attendance at all four training classes is mandatory for certification. Volunteers are needed to speak on behalf of abused and neglected children in Hernando County involved in Dependency Court proceedings. Volunteering typically requires just a few hours a week; all time and monetary donations are tax-deductible. For information, call toll-free 1-866-341-1425.

Sing a cappella? Join these men
The Hernando Harmonizers male a cappella chorus needs singers. The chorus is open to male singers ages 17 to 88. Rehearsals are at 6:45 p.m. Mondays at Nativity Lutheran Church, 6363 Commercial Way. The chorus is preparing for a show on Nov. 17. All music, learning CDs and tapes, as well as professional direction, are provided. Audubon Society plans birding event
The Hernando County Audubon Society will have a birding event in the Chassohowitzka Wildlife Management Area at 8 a.m. Sept. 15. Those going are to meet at the entrance off U.S. 19, north of Weeki Wachee, or meet for carpooling at 7:45 a.m. sharp at Hardee's on Commercial Way at Cortez Boulevard. Deadline Saturday for Idol contest
Saturday is the deadline to enter the Spring Hill Idol contest that is part of the Spring Hill 40th Birthday Bash. The contest is open to Hernando County residents ages 13 to 25 (as of Sept. 1). Entry forms are available at county middle and high schools, or by calling Laura at 585-6832 or 650-8463. Entry forms must be completed and sent to the Spring Hill Community Association, P.O. Box 3092, Spring Hill, FL 34611. The audition date is Sept. 8. The contest is limited to the first 150 entrants and will be held Sept. 23 during the Spring Hill 40th Birthday Bash at the Lake House, 1202 Kenlake Ave. The winner will receive a $500 cash prize. The contest is not open to professional singers.
