TAMPA - A Brandon man who wants to be Hillsborough County supervisor of elections described the current officeholder as "inept, dishonest and political" in announcing his own bid for the job Wednesday. Lee Nelson, 30, a Democrat who works in information technology, said he plans to restore honesty to the supervisor's office. He accused current Supervisor Buddy Johnson of losing votes, moving polling places without telling voters and surrounding himself with a partisan "cabal." The announcement was made at the Town 'N Country branch library, a former early voting site, to underscore Johnson's stated intention to eliminate some early voting sites at libraries. Most of Nelson's accusations were based on stories from the St. Petersburg Times. His announcement was timed to coincide with the August 2004 primary when Johnson's lost 245 votes, which was blamed on a computer problem. "Buddy does not understand technology," said Nelson, who ran unsuccessfully last year against state Rep. Trey Traviesa. "He is a cook with a degree in religion, not someone with proper training."

pam -- the article is slightly misleading; they aren't 'allegations' as Buddy has never publicly denied the wrong doings that were sited. I worked for the PR company that Buddy hired to deal with most of these events. Shaddy, shaddy man.

Does any SOE in the state understand technology? Perhaps that is why we are going to a paper ballot. No more touch screens. So Lee, gotta do some homework. You'd be surprise what other SOE's educational & work experience as well.

Buddy Johnson: The embodiment of cronyism. He won his job last time without trying and without caring. Be prepared for a dog fight. Power to Mr. Nelson!!

Buddy Johnson has been at the public feeding ground for WAY too long. He's been a political appointee to almost every job but dog catcher. And he has performed poorly at all of them. Here in Plant City WE ARE READY FOR A CHANGE!!!

I've seen Lee in action. He is a superb technologist, who understands the logistics and demographics to improve citizen participation in our floundering democracy at the local level with his rock solid integrity and skill set. Go Lee Go!

Lee Nelson is probably the most honest candidate I have ever met. He is a perfect match for the job! Glad he is calling Buddy out on his shortcomings. I hope democrats get behind him and ensure he has enough resources to keep on attacking...
