Nativity Catholic Church needs volunteers for its food pantry and food bank.

The Brandon organization distributed nearly 3-million pounds of food in 2006, plus 145,436 pounds of pet food to nonprofit animal programs. Donations also go to veterans and the Department of Children and Families.

Volunteer opportunities are available weekday mornings and Thursday afternoons. Call Pat Le Jeune at 707-1523 for more information.

Celebrate World Community Day on Sept. 7 with the Greater Brandon Church Women United.

The event will include an 11 a.m. program on family resources, followed by a covered-dish luncheon at First Presbyterian Church of Brandon, 121 Carver Ave. The church will supply desserts and drinks.

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the Henry Gibson Social Hall of the Beth Israel Synagogue, 1115 E Del Webb Blvd., in Sun City Center.

The group is open to all faiths, and members are dedicated to the free and responsible search for truth and meaning in life.

Robert P. Tucker, minister of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lakeland, speaks the first Thursday of every month.

Friendship Baptist Church, 1511 El Rancho Drive, in Sun City Center, offers Sunday and Wednesday Bible study, a women's mission union and information on interpreting for the deaf. Call 633-5950 for more information.

The Tree of Light Metaphysical Awareness and Worship Center, 209 Elrod Drive, Brandon, presents several programs each month. Offerings include alternative healing, spiritual development, a monthly healing circle and worship services. Call 689-1751 for more information.

Resurrection Catholic Church in Riverview needs sponsors for its fourth annual block party. The event features bands, carnival rides, food booths, a car and truck show, and numerous raffles. It takes place Oct. 12-14 at the church, 6819 Krycul Ave.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers a free genealogy research service at the Tampa Family History Center. Hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 1 to 9 p.m. Thursdays. The center is at 7851 Lutz-Lake Fern Road in Odessa. Call 926-3596.
