Simms sits self due to hip strain
By STEPHEN F. HOLDER, Times Staff Writer
Published August 31, 2007
TAMPA - The final audition came and went, and quarterback Chris Simms' only participation was tossing a ball around in pregame warmups.
But it wasn't a slight by the coaching staff.
Simms said he strained his hip in practice Tuesday, didn't feel comfortable playing and decided to sit.
"It's not bad. It's not anything that's going to hold me out for a long time," he said. "But as far as playing tonight, if I had to run for a first down or anything like that, I don't think I could have done it. I was just practicing and doing a little rehab and just got it. But I'll be okay. I guess you could say my luck hasn't been real high lately."
Asked after the game about Simms' status, coach Jon Gruden immediately grew irritated.
"I'm not going to say nothing about it," he said. "You have to ask Chris. I have no idea what this is or what occurred. He scratched himself from the game, and general manager Bruce Allen and the trainers and Chris Simms can answer those questions.
"I'm tired of talking about the injuries. I'm very disappointed he didn't get a chance to play tonight because he's a great kid and he has a lot of promise."
Will he get to show that promise for Tampa Bay?
Final cuts come Saturday afternoon, and the Bucs have four quarterbacks on the roster. Simms is joined by starter Jeff Garcia and backups Luke McCown and Bruce Gradkowski. It appears a final decision regarding Simms has not been made, but the fifth-year player out of Texas said he did not want to be placed on injured reserve and thought he could return to form soon. Simms, 26, has struggled to recover from a splenectomy last fall.
Right now, he's ready for anything.
"The National Football League is a business right now," he said. "I do realize that. I grew up in the environment (with father Phil Simms), so I know what it's all about. Loyalty is not used a whole lot in this day and age of football because it's (about) what have you done for me lately? And I realize that."
But Simms hopes to get the chance because, he says, he is close to getting back to himself and might be ready for the season opener next week.
"If I continue to work and do the rehab and stuff that I've been doing, we've got a pretty good hold on this thing right now, and I'm doing the right exercises," he said. "I've really felt a difference the last few weeks. I'm hoping that, if they're going to keep me here, which I hope, at Seattle I would be ready to go if they needed me."

Even great quarterbacks look bad playing in a bad offense. Chris, and Bruce are better players than they showed last year.

Children, Please remember that Chris Simms is the only QB on the team that has led us to a division title. Early last year, the O-Line was dreadful.Give him time to heal. It takes a full year per MD's.

Are you guys kidding me? Simms has to be the 3rd string QB, Gruden is not going to put himself in the same situation as he did last year. Gradkowski?? come on, McCown is much better. He needs 2-3 weeks, Simms is not going anywhere, enough said!

He'll never be a starter. He's soft, he can't lead by example, furthermore, he's too emotional.

Place him in the PUP list and hope that he can get it back together.

Dump Simms and his salary. He's a coach's worst nightmare. Looks great, shows promise, but never performs under pressue, refused to compete for a job from high school to college to the NFL. Dump him.

I think if the Bucs don't cut him, it could be because they know Atlanta may just pick him up and he knows Gruden's playbook oh so well. He's a lefty. Vick's a lefty, Simms can throw long, Vick not so well, Vick could scramble, Simms not so well.

I don't think Simms will be cut. He may or may not recover, but I'm starting to wonder if Gradkowski will learn to throw a long ball. Last night his attempts were all way off.

It seems everytime you look around qb simms is accident prone. I think Tampa Bay needs to take the loss and cut him outright. And if we need a qb next year. Go after one of the dozen or so coming out next year. If we have to go out and get another qb

Simms is simply missing some key ingredient. He is a tremendous athlete but has never been able to deliver in the clutch. Whatever "it" is that athletes like MJ, Tiger, Elway, etc. have in abundance is lacking from Simms' makeup.

My guess is that Simms will go on the PUP list, which will give him six weeks to start feeling right and the Bucs more time to evaluate him.

What a shame if they let Simms go. Watching Gradkowski last night just keep missing long throws that Chris makes easily makes you realize Allen and Gruden are no judge of players.

Hurt his hip? Are you kidding me? There is a guy up in GB who plays through *everything*, every game. He gets it. This one does not. Cut him (he's not that good anyway, really).

Dan...You sound like a bitter old prune. Simms has more talent than Griese at this point in time. If Griese is so good why has he bounced around with so many teams? Simms will be back & will provide some team with a good QB.
Good luck Chris.

they should of cut simms a long time ago. I really thought they should of kept Brian Griese and let Simms go at the time. Griese showed more promise, but Gruden doesn't know talent if it bit him. Need another Dungy like figure in Tampa.

Simms is gone and just doesn't know it. but if they cut him and Bruce gets suspended for his involvement in the toledo scandal, the bucs will be hurting for a qb. But we all know Gruden wants this kid out of here, it's on him if it doesn't work out.
