Randy Dagostino has a young team.
But, the longtime Berkeley Prep volleyball coach said, it's a very talented team.
That skill was on full display Thursday night as the Bucs defeated Clearwater Central Catholic 25-15, 25-14, 25-17 in their season opener.
"I thought a lot of people contributed," Dagostino said. "We had good ball control and aggressive serving. And we got our feet wet."
Bucs middle blocker Lindsay Young produced 10 kills, four aces and three blocks. Setter Becca Howard added 32 assists and four aces, and libero Christina Theofilos had 19 digs and an ace.
- Durant d. Sarasota Riverview 25-17, 25-23, 25-23
At Durant, the Cougars improved to 2-0 behind the play of junior middle blocker Kelsey Horton (11 kills, 10 digs, five blocks) and outside hitter Stephanie Eukovich (10 kills, five digs, three blocks).
"It was a huge win for us," Durant coach Dawn Hough said. "We always lose to them in the final of districts."
- Holy Names d. St. Pete Catholic 25-13, 25-9, 25-11
The Jaguars improved to 1-0 after getting strong play from freshman setter Ginny Willis (16 assists, three aces) and hitters Erica Almerico (10 kills, five aces) and Hilary Hunt (10 kills).
"That's the best we've looked in a few years in an opening march," AHN coach Doug Chinchar said.
Girls golf
Sickles 174, Plant 184
At Heritage Harbor, Amanda Bair shot 1-under 35 to lead Sickles to the win. The round was a career-best for the senior. It included birdies on the par-3 third and par-5 fifth.
Freshman Alex Milan added a 38.
That, too, was a career low.
"It's a big win," Sickles coach Mark Mann said. "All the girls were happy."
Lauren Jansen led the Panthers with a round of 40.
- Bloomingdale 199, Armwood (no score)
At Diamond Hill, Alysha Vigue shot 44 to lead the Bulls (2-0). Armwood (1-1) only posted three scores because its fourth player suffered a hip injury during the match.
Danielle Gildea led the Hawks by shooting 46.
Boys golf
Jesuit 158, Shorecrest Prep 162
Jesuit's Jack Twomey shot even-par 36 at Rogers Park and two other Tigers - Trent Silver (38) and Dylan Malafronte (39) - broke 40.
Jesuit is 2-0.
"They all played solid," Jesuit coach John Crumbley said.
- Bloomingdale 164, Armwood 224
At Diamond Hill, Sean Curran shot 3-over 39 and Scott Goeb fired a 41 as Bloomingdale improved to 2-0. Armwood (1-1) was led by the 49 of Matthew Bolock.
