Northside Christian

A closer look at the Mustangs Coach: Bob Dare Last year's record: 7-4
At Northside, it will be hard to tell the quarterback without a scorecard. The Mustangs have three quarterbacks - Tyler Stowell, Drew Phillips and David Edwards - who will see playing time. ¶ There's depth at other skill positions, too. Danny Speake, Seth Cole and Seth Rogers return at running back. Ben Kaylor, Lewis Price and Sabijh Maliackal are back as receivers. ¶ The defense is well-stocked, especially at linebacker, where Speake, John Stephens, Josh Hornbeck, Hunter Habib and JoJo Hess return. ¶ It's enough to help the Mustangs remain in contention for their fourth playoff appearance in the past five years.
Speake can run over tacklers and tackle runners. The running back/linebacker is a two-way star and is among 15 returning seniors.
How frequently are you on MySpace?
I check it every other day, pretty much to stay in touch with friends.
What's a perfect day away from football?
Probably hanging out with friends.
Favorite fast-food joint?
Checkers.
What do you order?
The Big Buford sandwich. It's a standard burger, kind of like the quarter-pounder. It's either that or two steak burgers.
Favorite television show?
It has to be The Simpsons.
What Simpsonscharacter is most like you?
I like Mr. Burns. He's hilarious. But he's probably not me. I guess I don't have one.
By the numbers
5 Shutouts Northside recorded last season.
61 Points the Mustangs allowed in last year's playoff game to eventual state champion Belle Glade Glades Day.
Kicking up a storm
The quarterback battle is not the only intriguing one. Northside also has four kickers - Seth Rogers, Seth Cole, Cory Johnson and Jeremy Smith - who can hit field goals of at least 40 yards.
Confidence builder
The Mustangs got a huge boost with a 27-7 win over Class5A Seminole. Everything seemed to work for Northside. Edwards showed his big-play potential with a 50-yard touchdown run. Stowell also threw for two touchdowns, a 12-yarder to Kaylor and a 17-yarder to Hess. The defense held the Warhawks to two first downs in the first half.
Reloading
Northside lost four starters on defense. But it shouldn't matter. Defensive linemen Mike Richards, Chad Rose and Scott Price return. Colin Hoke, Billy Richards and Ryan McDonald are back in the secondary.
