River Ridge
By Times staff
Published August 31, 2007
Achilles' heel
Coach Tim Stevens' biggest concern is lack of depth on the offensive line. With a young, inexperienced line, he is concerned even one injury could cause a personnel ripple felt by the whole team.
Feeling the burn
River Ridge has gotten stronger. Fewer than 10 players on last season's team could max out in double digits on the 185-pound bench press. This year, more than 10 are at that goal due to a preseason emphasis on the weightroom.
Losing raw talent
River Ridge will miss the presence of first-team all-conference lineman David Sowers. Stevens describes him as a "very tough kid, who worked hard and had a little nasty to him." But quarterback Blake Spinks said Stevens has been successful convincing kids the program is on the rise, so kids who weren't playing are returning to the field.
Streaking
The Royal Knights have lost 23 straight games since beating Ridgewood Oct.14, 2004. That game also was the last time the Royal Knights scored more than 20 points in a game. But they get first-year Sunlake for their opener.

Five key players
1. Shawn Ford, Sr., RB
Power runner of a backfield duo, Ford is the onfield leader.
2. Markel Bell, Sr., RB
Speedy half of the backfield, look for Bell to take advantage of a Ford-weakened D-line.
3. Spinks, Sr., QB
The experienced Spinks looks to help his team grab a win.
4. Lance Babcock, Sr., WR
At 6-6, Babcock will be a favorite target for Spinks.
5. Jimbo Gossard, Sr., TE
Only 2 inches shorter than Babcock, Gossard is built like a house with good hands.
