roll dice for breast cancer research

COUNTYWIDE
The Brooksville, Ridge Manor and Spring Hill Contours Expresses will host "Bunco For Breast Cancer," at 1 p.m. Sept. 15 at its three locations at 857 S Broad St., Brooksville; 3087 Anderson Snow Road, Spring Hill; and 31087 Cortez Blvd., Ridge Manor.
The event is part of the National Partnership with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and all proceeds benefit the foundation.
Anyone interested can participate in the bunco event; Contours membership is not required. Each participant will make a donation to play, which will be matched by the Contours Express Corporate office and submitted directly to the Foundation for Research.
Bunco is a social dice game involving 100 percent luck and no skill (there are no decisions to be made), scoring and a simple set of rules. For information, contact Tracey Pager at 835-9605.
SPRING HILL
Free workshop for first-time home buyers
Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Central Florida and the Florida Gulf Coast, Inc., will offer a free First Time Home Buyers Workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8 at VFW Post 10209, 15166 Spring Hill Drive.
The workshop is part of the nonprofit organization's Housing Counseling Services. Topics include: determining the price of a home you can afford; down payment and closing cost assistance; prequalifying vs. preapproval; shopping for interest rates; closing on a home loan; qualifying for a mortgage loan; free financial counseling, and other home-buying related topics.
Other workshops are scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 20 and Sept. 27 at the Alice Hall Community Center, 38116 Fifth Ave., Zephyrhills.

Papers' historical role to be told by display
A fine-art exhibit, Newspapers and the Shaping of American Memory, will be on display Thursday through Oct. 8 in the Alric C.T. Pottberg Library Gallery at Pasco-Hernando Community College, 10230 Ridge Road.
The exhibit will display the role newspapers have played in telling America's history from the mid 19th century through the current era.
The exhibit is free. Library hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. For information, call (727) 816-3299.

Students invited to craft a celebration
The Spring Hill Community Association invites Hernando County students to participate in the following events as part of the Spring Hill 40th Birthday Celebration:
- "Why I Like Spring Hill" contest for students in Kindergarten through third grades. Participants can write a sentence or two telling, in their own words, what they like best about Spring Hill.
- "What I Like Best About Living in Spring Hill," for students in fourth through eighth grades. This is a written composition (200 words or less).
- "Spring Hill, The Future," for students in ninth through 12th grades. This is a written composition (500 words or less) on programs and opportunities Spring Hill can develop for young residents in coming years.
- Art contest for students in kindergarten through third grade - a picture of Spring Hill as they see it (any medium).
- Art contest for students in grades four through eight - any medium art project depicting their view of Spring Hill
- Art contest for students in grades nine through 12 - any medium art project depicting their view of Spring Hill.
All entries will be displayed at the Birthday Celebration, which will be Sept. 22-23 at the Lake House, 1202 Kenlake Ave. First-place winners will receive a pizza party for their class and a gift certificate donated by local merchants.
All entries must be received at the association's office in the Lake House no later than Sept. 10. For information, call 666-4746.

Philippine-American group marks Year 2
The Hernando County Philippine-American Association, Inc. will celebrate its second anniversary with a dinner dance from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Wellington Clubhouse, 400 Wexford Ave.
Music will be provided by Rhythm n' Motions Band. The guest of honor will be Hernando County Commission Chairman Jeff Stabins.

Disaster awareness workshop Sept. 8
Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite invites area residents to a Natural Disaster and Awareness Workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Hernando County Emergency Operations Center, 18900 Cortez Blvd.
Participating in the workshop will be Daniel Noah of the National Oceanic and Athmospheric Administration, Hernadno County Emergency Management and the Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT).
Workshop highlights include what to do when a natural disaster strikes, tours of the Emergency Operations Center, helpful hints to keep safe and alert during an emergency, and information about Brown-Waite's legislation to create a national catastrophic insurance fund. Those attending may ask questions about FEMA and how the federal government responds to hurricanes.
Those attending are encouraged to bring their weather radios to be programmed for Hernando County dangerous weather alerts.
