What is the most recent figure for the national debt?

About $8.9-trillion and counting. The Bureau of Public Debt is responsible for accounting for and reporting the debt. The Treasury Department reports the debt on its treasury direct Web site, which is updated every business day. It's called the "Debt to the Penny and Who Holds It," and it's available at: www.treasurydirect.gov/NP/BPDLogin?application=np.
