Cathy Harrelson
Candidate for St. Petersburg City Council, District 3
The Times points out there are "two promising newcomers" and "two good choices" for District 3. I am one of those choices, and here's what sets me apart:
- My career in municipal finance and financial services brings the needed skills to city budget issues that my opponents do not possess. I have the knowledge and experience to accomplish citywide goals to improve quality of life for all our citizens, whose dollars don't stretch as far as they used to.
- I am a strong environmental leader and consensus builder, specializing in smart growth, water quality, and energy efficiency - issues that save the city money and provide a cleaner environment.
- City Council is losing one of only two women members. Diverse insight strengthens the council and its decisions.
- My commercial airline pilot opponent flies to Europe regularly. It is fair to ask how he will have the time and attention for all council duties. I will always be available to be your voice. You can count on me to be level-headed, prepared and professional.

Bill Dudley
Candidate for St. Petersburg city council, District 3
The Times' editorial board's decision to endorse another candidate disappointed but did not surprise me. The Times continues endorsing candidates who maintain the "status quo" elitist mentality that is completely out of touch with what the citizens of St. Petersburg are begging for in their city government.
While you say that my "tax glut" rants need work, you are ignoring the frustration of the majority of the citizens who feel paralyzed by taxation and insurance. Neither retirees nor those with growing families who wish to downsize or improve their station in life feel as if they have any viable solutions to altering their current situation. The impact of property taxes and insurance make any change difficult.
While much is determined by state legislation, the irresponsible prioritization of city spending affects all citizens. I don't want park or artistic programs cut; rather, I feel restructuring the current budget will avail additional funds for these activities, as well as public safety. This will improve the quality of life while reducing the onus currently placed on our citizens.
I am the most qualified candidate with time to commit to the responsibilities of this position. How disappointing the Times cannot acknowledge that reality.
