County trying to scare up Halloween help

BROOKSVILLE
The Hernando County Parks and Recreation Department needs volunteers to help with the Halloween Harvest Festival from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St. Those interested may help with games, hayrides, and judging and coordinating contests, including the pet masquerade, costume contest and pumpkin-carving contest. Workshop focus is storm preparation
U.S. Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite invites residents to a Natural Disaster and Awareness Workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hernando County Emergency Operations Center, 18900 Cortez Blvd. Participating in the workshop will be Daniel Noah of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Hernando County Emergency Management Department and the Community Emergency Response Teams. Tours of the EOC will be given. Those attending may bring their weather radios to get them programmed for Hernando County dangerous weather alerts. Call 799-8354.

Retirement ready? Program can help
The Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service will host a two-session program, "Getting Ready for Retirement," from 12:15 to 1 p.m. Wednesday and Sept. 12 at the Forest Oaks Government Center, 7479 Forest Oaks Blvd. The class is for those planning to retire soon, as well as for those who may not be retiring for 20 years. Participants will learn about savings, investments and insight on how to improve their financial health. Those attending should bring a lunch.
