East Lake girls, boys breeze to swimming victory

East Lake girls 150-24 and boys (132-27) swim teams defeated Pinellas Park with little trouble.
The Eagles girls team was led by Katie Torres, who won the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley Tuesday. Teammate Amanda Anderson took the 500 freestyle with a 5:34.97 and Halee Spencer won the 100 backstroke. East Lake's Ian Bennett (200 IM, 100 fly) and Kyle Eschenroder (50 free and 100 free) each won a pair of individual boys events.
Seminole boys 118, Boca Ciega 39; Seminole girls 141, Boca Ciega 41
The Warhawks cruised to a win at the Walter Fuller Pool, but the Pirates' Kim Brainard (200 IM), Justin Gaeta (50 and 100 free) and Matt Miller (100 breastsroke) won individual events.
St. Petersburg boys 144, Gibbs 46; St. Petersburg girls 150, Gibbs 32
It took a few tries, but the Green Devils won their first meet of the season. St. Petersburg's first two meets against Largo and Countryside were canceled because of lightning.
"We've got some young kids swimming," St. Petersburg coach Sandy Heidt said. "It was nice to see them complete an entire meet."
Sydney Newfield, Tracy Rorer, Colleen Quinn and Allie Evans won all four events (two individual, two relays) they competed in while teammates Robert Vanneste and Doug Niebaum did the same.
VOLLEYBALLIndian Rocks Christian d. Bayshore Christian, 25-15, 25-19, 25-19
Visiting IRC (4-0) won its first early-season test, sweeping perennial powerhouse and nine-time defending district champ Bayshore Christian. IRC was led by Brianne Yeates, who recorded 15 kills and four aces. The Eagles' Jessica Jones and Liz Zeitler had 10 digs each while coach Mark Foster pointed to a "career night" by Rachel Boeche (five kills). Foster also said he will be adding 6-foot eighth-grader Madi Loebel to the roster from junior varsity today.
East Lake d. Tarpon Springs, 25-10, 25-14, 25-21
The Eagles improved to 2-1 behind 15 kills from Sara Rex. Teammate Karly Gilchrist had 27 assists and four aces while Andria Tagarelli chipped in 28 digs. The Eagles next host rival PHU at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Boca Ciega d. Northeast, 26-24, 25-23, 13-25, 25-19
Bogie remained unbeaten (4-0) in a match coach Brad Daniel called "fun to watch."
"We fell behind late in that first game and then stormed back to take it," Daniel said. "It really set the pace and we fed off that from there."
The Pirates were led in kills by Bianca Iannello while Olivia Hopper provided strong serving.
Clearwater Central Catholic d. St. Petersburg Catholic, 25-15, 25-7, 25-18
Strong serving (11 aces) helped the Marauders improve to 1-1 against the visiting Barons.
"Our serving was tremendous and even though we only had 11 aces, we had a ton of tough serves," first-year coach Brian Imperiale said. "We were aggressive with the serve and took them out of their system."
Mary Michael Toups had eight kills for the Marauders and Mackenzie Kenner added six kills and four aces.
Canterbury d. Citrus Park Day School, 25-10, 25-8, 25-9
The visiting Crusaders (3-1, 3-0) spoiled the first match in school history for Citrus Park Day School. Canterbury had little trouble, led by Abby Jay's 14 aces.
GIRLS GOLFTampa Prep 217, CCC 232
The Marauders fell to 0-2 at Bellaire Country Club. CCC was led by Morgan Kimsey's 55 and Kelly Coston's 56.
Tarpon Springs 154, Osceola 190
The Spongers had a pair of golfers under 38 and freshman Dakoda Dowd fired 40 at Bardmoor. Osceola (1-3) was led by Matt Heinz (45) and freshman Chris Clancy (47).
Shorecrest 160, St. Petersburg Catholic 163, Northside Christian 169, Admiral Farragut 193
SPC's Devon Hernandez fired a match-low 36 at the Bayou Golf Club. The Chargers' Mike Holmes finished a stroke off the pace while Northside Christian's Gus Myers and David Dresselhaus each carded 38.
Calvary Christian 153, Jesuit 163, Tampa Prep 198
Calvary Christian's Aaron Watson shot the low score of the day, finishing with 36 at Westchase.
