FORT LAUDERDALE
Former Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal tax evasion and mail fraud conspiracy charges involving more than $80,000 in alleged hidden payments and financial favors.
The guilty plea came a day after Jenne, 60, resigned as sheriff, completing a swift downfall for a man long regarded as one of Broward County's leading Democratic politicians.
Jenne's plea agreement with prosecutors calls for a sentence of between 18 and 24 months in federal prison, but U.S. District Judge William Dimitrouleas has the final say.
Jenne will remain free on bail until his Nov. 16 sentencing.
Jenne had been sheriff of Florida's second-most populous county since 1998. He had previously been in the Legislature and County Commission and been a state prosecutor.
