Debra Graziano doesn't want to disrespect her son's privacy. She'll only say: He suffered a severe head injury. Please continue to pray.

John J. Graziano, 22, a U.S. Marine who survived a tour in Iraq, is in critical condition at Bayfront Medical Center after a car accident in Clearwater. The crash received national attention because the driver, Nick Bollea, 17, has a famous father, wrestler Hulk Hogan.

Graziano, a 2003 graduate of Dunedin High School, has been friends with Bollea for years, since John had braces, his mom said in an interview with the St. Petersburg Times outside the hospital Thursday evening. They met through their shared interest in auto racing.

But Debra Graziano doesn't want to talk about the events of Aug. 26, when Bollea lost control of his Toyota Supra near downtown Clearwater and smashed into a tree.

She doesn't want to speculate on whether the young men were racing against a silver Dodge Viper, as witnesses reported.

"That's irrelevant to me right now," she said. She hasn't contacted a lawyer and said the Bollea family has been at the hospital with her every day.

She said Terry Bollea, also known as Hulk Hogan, is so upset about the situation that she has to comfort him.

What's relevant to her right now is John. A man who doesn't use extra words, who loves chicken Parmesan and beer with lime and sleeps with his two miniature dachshunds, Rosie and Porsche, and his two cats, Chloe and Zoe.

She wants people to know that he's funny. When he was 11, he went on a trip from New York to Florida with his chain-smoking uncle, father and grandfather. "I feel like a Slim Jim," he said when he got out of the car. "A skinny, smoked piece of meat."

He is messy. He hangs his dirty underwear near the bathroom sink and blames it on his younger brother, Michael.

His mom knows why the military can't find Osama bin Laden.

"Because he's in here somewhere," she said, referring to his disastrous room.

In October, he came back from a seven-month tour in Iraq. He would have re-enlisted but knew it would make his mom crazy.

So he started working on elaborate T-shirt designs and made plans to restore a loft. He thought about moving to Nashville.

He started studying to work in the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. He really wants to be a firefighter but couldn't afford to go to school because he bought his mom a new car.

As a boy, John used to wear his uncle's Marine dress blue jacket. When he first tried it on, it came to his knees. A few years ago, it fit.

After losing a family member in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, he told his mom he wanted to become a Marine to do something he could be proud of.

He begged her not to talk him out of it.

He called her before he left for Iraq, and she missed his call. She's kind of glad she did because of the message he left.

"Hello to the best mother in the world," he said. "I'm getting on the plane but don't worry because I'll be back soon."

I think everyone needs to leave Nick alone. it was an accident, it not like no one else in the world has one. John is just as much to blame he knew how nich is when he drives and second its his fault for not wearing his seat belt!!!

rich or not--kids today have too much freedom---parents gotto step up and stop spoiling their kids
by Jude 09/13/07 03:37 PM
Overindulgence leads to irresponsibility Some rich people give thier children everything but good sense. Nick is a minor, his parents should not have allowed him to drive after the first speeding ticket, let alone his third. Consequnces are needed
by monique 09/12/07 10:09 PM
Nicks dad might have the power to get him out of this hole, but not the power to bring someone out of consciousness. Now the only one who has the power is GOD, so lets all pray for a miracle.

Some of the people who are involved in this tragedy are famous, making this situation more dificult to deal with. Almost all teenagers get into some sort of trouble. Nick and John will have to deal the results of that day for the rest of their lives.
by Evan 09/08/07 03:41 PM
Nick should be convicted and have his driver's license taken away. It's a tragedy because Nick felt he was above the law and thinks he can get away with everything because of his Dad's celebrity status. A sad time for his friend & I hope he recovers.
by jessica rasdall 09/08/07 06:56 AM
this is not about me mj so how dare you sit there and write that about girl flips car and goes to prison. sorry but find a life. not mine nice was racing and thats against the law also thats what lawyers are for and good ones if that.
by Ashley 09/07/07 10:54 PM
This is a very sad time for both familys. but its not fair to put the blame on nick. both were in the car. Both new of what they were doing. its sad that john is in bad shape but we all should just pray for both familys.

I guess I am the only one who thinks all the religous comments sound so pathetic.Prayer isn't going to pay for this young mans years of reabilatation. There needs to be a law suit.the costs will be in the millons in the end.praying isn't going to help
by susie 09/07/07 08:43 PM
I have been in her shoes and right now all she can think about is her son lying in that hospital bed in critical condition. For her sake I hope Hogn wakes up and gets well. for the HOGANS (TERRY) U SEE THAT EVEN SHE KNOWS YOUR SON WAS RACING. MORON
by Becky 09/07/07 08:23 PM

First thing, none of us have the right to tell anyone what to do, second, I am a father of 11, been there and done that, John is in good hands and has those who care for him there, why not just pray and support his mother, there ia where she needs us
by mike 09/07/07 07:12 PM
god almighty. please help this boy.
by Laura 09/07/07 05:05 PM
Hang in there Debra,I know how you feel. I've been there done that one Twice. I will pray for you and your family. I will ask GOD to bring him back to us. no matter what. And Hulk and Linda I will always say it Nick is a good kid. Hang in there nick.
by Rebecca 09/07/07 04:45 PM
I pray for John and hope he pulls through!!
by ROGERMEDINA 09/07/07 02:28 PM
IM SURE THAT BOTH FAMILIES ARE GOING THROUGH ROUGH HARD TIMES, KEEP THEM IN YOUR PRAYERS. RESPECT THIER PRIVACY.
by Gloria 09/07/07 02:11 PM
The court system must deal with Nick in regards to any laws he may have broken. Even though the Hogan's are part of this tragedy, what goes on between the two families is none of our business. We are not their judge or jury, only God will decide.
by Teresa 09/07/07 01:49 PM
Debbie Graziano is sharing her Christian faith with all of us. Take that away with you instead giving advice to sue. She has true faith and knows the Lord will provide. Bless you Deb, John, Christin, Michael, and you too Ed.
by Nicole 09/07/07 01:36 PM
While this is a horrible tragedy, it was an accident. Let's all hope John gets better and Nick learns that cars can be deadly weapons when driven at high speeds. I'm sure Nick wishes he were lying in that hospital bed instead - he's suffered, too.
by shelly(caring mother) 09/07/07 01:26 PM
Ms.Graziano, You show so much compassion.Forgiving is the only way. Hate gets you nowhere but down. The Bolleas will do the right thing and help with your sons med.needs forever if needed. NIck will suffer his entire life. What a great example you are.
by Sam 09/07/07 01:13 PM
The military will pay his medical bills if he was still on active duty when he crashed.
by Mc 09/07/07 12:35 PM
I know that the Hogan's have agreed to pay for every last detail of this incident. If the Grazianos get a lawyer it will be for formality only. Lets all pray for John and remember the caregivers who are suffering every second that john is not awake!
by GH 09/07/07 12:31 PM
My inclination would be to not sue and I don't think she'll have to based upon what we have heard of the Hogans. I bet they'll help however they can and already have. However, Nick should still face strong legal consequences. He placed many at risk.
by CJ 09/07/07 12:17 PM
This young man fights for OUR country & survives. Then rides with Nick Hogan & fighting for his life because he may not survive.Nick deserves punishment for this crime. Thoughts & prayers are with John, family & friends of the Grazianos. GOD BLESS YOU
by CJ 09/07/07 12:13 PM
This is sooooo SAD.Who cares about Hogans, everyone needs to focus on John & his family. If the family decides to pull the plug on John, will Hogans WAKE UP THEN & realize Nick needs to PAY for this tragedy???God Bless John & his family.Prayers are w/u.
by Frank 09/07/07 12:08 PM
So Bevis, why would you believe that the Hogans wouldn't be doing everything possible to keep John alive? Obviously if he passes, it will be a tragedy all the way around.
by Patrick 09/07/07 11:55 AM
I'm not thinking of greed at this point, but stupidity... our roads are not racetracks... this was completely senseless, and completely avoidable...
by Evie 09/07/07 11:55 AM
My prayers go out to John and the family. Reading about him, tell me just how proud this mother is. Let's keep the focus on his survival and long term wellness. God sent him home from Iraq for a reason, his work here isn't done yet. Hang on John.
by Robbie 09/07/07 11:45 AM
Stories of military serving in Iraq and coming home always make me teary eyed but this one hits hard once again because John made it home from Iraq but now he is fighting for his life. My prayers are with him and his family and friends.
by Jen 09/07/07 11:44 AM
Nick should be charged, and plead guilty, do his time like a man. That said...the Graziano family sure has a lot of class. I'm sure they know that Nick did not mean to hurt him, and has to deal with guilt everyday.
by Susan 09/07/07 11:35 AM
For those that say "hire a lawyer", do you not have the intelligence to know you DO NOT HAVE TO HIRE A LAWYER to pursue a claim??? And why pay a lawyer 40%?! The Hogans will pay, I think that's a non-issue.
by T 09/07/07 10:54 AM
First, to REALITYCHECK - severe brain injuries do not always mean death, I have a very healthy and full-functioning brother who suffered a severe brain injury. To those who say sue the parents - may your children never do anything wrong.
by bevis 09/07/07 10:47 AM
so ashley. who will pay all thse medical bills that are piling up? he's been in ICU for how long now? Mom couldn't afford a car, now she has to pay the hospital bills. Maybe the Hogans have offeed to pay them, who knows. They deserve better
by Malobou 09/07/07 10:47 AM
John sounds like a wonderful young man and his mother needs all the support she can get. My prayers go out to the both of them. It is hard to read some of the comments here. We have all heard the line "Life isn't fair". This is just one instance.
