For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.
Armwood two-way lineman Matt Patchan, ejected from last week's victory against Plant, has been cleared to play tonight at Wharton after an appeal by the Hawks. Patchan, Hillsborough County's top college prospect, was given an automatic ejection - and suspension from the following game - after drawing two personal-foul penalties in the 26-7 win against Plant. But coach Sean Callahan said the school was informed by Denarvise Thornton, who oversees officials for the Florida High School Athletic Association, that Patchan had been cleared. But the decision could be overturned today. Callahan said inconsistencies in the game officials' report led to the appeal.
Berkeley Prep juniors Julian and Jordan Crockett each picked up key interceptions in last week's win. Too bad coach Dominick Ciao sometimes doesn't know who to congratulate. Ciao said he can't tell the twins apart. "I just call them by their nicknames, 'Crock,' and I typically get the right one."
Brandon, still stinging from its loss to Middleton last week, had to recover mentally and physically. Coach John Lima said the flu bug spread throughout the school (hitting about 20 football players). Said King coach Earl Garcia III, the Eagles' opponent tonight, "That back, (Brandon standout) Samir Baker was one of them, right?" Nah, Baker said. "It's no big deal. Everyone just has runny noses."
Tampa Catholic will play without two starters - center Alex Espinosa (hamstring) and defensive tackle Mike Aguila (infection). Plant tailback Lovell Jackson (ankle) will be a game-time decision tonight against Gaither.
The (VW) Bus
In his resounding varsity debut (13 carries, 82 yards, one TD) in last week's 26-7 win against Plant, Armwood junior fullback Matt Eastman displayed an extra gear you won't find on his pea-green, 1977 Volkswagen Bus. Yep, Eastman drives it to school daily. For more on the Hawks' newest star, check out blogs.tampabay.com/preps.
