For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.
Nature Coast (1-0) at Springstead (1-0) This county rivalry took a turn last year when a last-second TD gave Nature Coast the win. Springstead must find a way to stop the Sharks' ground attack while limiting turnovers. Gould: Sharks clip Eagles' wings and continue building a new tradition in a 28-14 victory.
Murphy: Springstead has all the motivation in the world, but Nature Coast has too much talent. Sharks, 42-20.
Capel: Nature Coast, 28-13. Nature Coast has a strong running attack with Tevin Drake. Springstead's young team won't be able to stop him.
River Ridge (1-0) at Gulf (0-1) River Ridge looks to make it two in a row for the first time in forever. Gulf needs to ride the legs of David Williams (close to 200 yards rushing last week). Gould: Royal Knights swashbuckle the Bucs to build a two-game win streak with a 30-13 victory.
Murphy: Gulf rebounds, but River Ridge puts up a fight. Gulf, 31-21.
Capel: River Ridge, 30-0. River Ridge is known to always have a strong defense. As you know, defense wins games.
Wesley Chapel (1-0) at Land O'Lakes (0-1) Land O'Lakes needs to get its offense on track. Wesley Chapel faces its first big test. Gould: Wildcats roar, okay, purr to a 17-12victory.
Murphy: Just call it a hunch: 17-13, Land O'Lakes.
Capel: Land O'Lakes, 26-20. Even with the loss to Pasco, I still consider LOL one of the powerhouse schools in the county.
Leesburg(1-0) at Central (1-0) Central, which struggled last week, puts its nine-game regular season win streak on the line against an always-tough Leesburg team. Gould: Leesburg gives the Bears a wakeup call with a 23-16 victory.
Murphy: Last week's performance against Hernando wakes these Bears up. Central, 13-10.
Capel: Leesburg, 41-7. Central won the game against Hernando last week because of special teams, not offense. So Leesburg will have a second-half blowout.
Mitchell (1-0) atZephyrhills (0-0) Zephyrhills had a chance to scout Mitchell last week, but the Mustangs had a chance to knock off any early-season rust. Stopping Mitchell QB Tate Humphrey is key. Gould: Bulldogs show some rust after opening with a bye week. Mustangs gallop to a 23-21 victory.
Murphy: Go with the experience: Mitchell, 31-24.
Capel: Zephyrhills, 35-14. Z-Hills always brings a strong team with talented running backs and a good core of defensive players. I'm sure they will come away with a win.
Hudson (0-1) at Hernando (0-1) Hernando's tough defense squares off against Hudson running back Sean Scott, who rushed for more than 190 yards last week. Gould: The Cobras strike and take down the Leopards in a 14-11 victory.
Murphy: Hernando, 7-2. Leopards defense pitches a shutout.
Capel: Hernando, 13-0. Hernando probably won't score on offense, but they definitely have a strong defense. Hernando has a group of talented players. Hudson has never been a strong team.
Hernando Christian (0-0) at Central Florida Christian (0-1) HCA has got to be aching to play after losing its season opener to rain. Gould: HCA is well-rested and better-equipped in a 10-2 victory.
Murphy: HCA, 21-14. Enough said.
Capel: Hernando Christian, 13-7. HCA usually has a pretty good team and good coaches.
Pasco (1-0) at Sebring (0-1) Sebring beat Pasco 35-28 last year, but the Pirates looked much improved in last week's victory over the Gators. Gould: Is there enough room on the Pirates' ship? Pasco rolls 21-10.
Murphy: Pasco rolls, 35-10.
Capel: Pasco, 45-13. The Pirates always come to play every year. With new coaches and a new attitude, I think the Pirates will be in the running for the playoffs again this year.
Santa Fe Catholic (1-0) at Bishop McLaughlin (0-0) Bishop McLaughlin plays its first game of the season against a Santa Fe Catholic team that rolled last week. Gould: Santa Fe Catholic ruins the Hurricanes' first home night game with a 23-7 victory.
Murphy: Bishop has to wait another week for a touchdown. 42-3.
Capel: Santa Fe Catholic, 21-7. With the same coaches and a good scheme, Santa Fe Catholic should pull out an easy win. Last week's celebrity: 6-2 (Dade City Mayor Hutch Brock) Season (all celebrities): 6-2
Izzy Gould: Last week 8-0, season 8-0 David Murphy: Last week 5-3, season 5-3
The celebrity picker
Dade City Mayor Hutch Brock put up a good fight last week, picking six of eight games correctly, but Izzy Gould stole the show with a perfect 8-0. This week, we wanted to feature someone who could beat us in a foot race. Who better than former Olympian John Capel, right?
Occupation: Runs John Capel's Total Body Fitness in Brooksville, specializing in nutrition, massage therapy and weight loss. Claim to fame: Football star at Hernando and the University of Florida. Ran the 200 meters at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
