Kenny Cavender was the star.
Chaz Heinz was the hero.
They made quite the tandem Thursday afternoon at Crescent Oaks in leading Mitchell past Ridgewood in a playoff after the teams tied at 162 in regulation. Heinz's par putt on the first playoff hole was the difference.
"It was tense," Mitchell coach Rick Hyatt said. "I was very impressed with Ridgewood. They have a very solid team. But I'm proud of our guys. That's our best round so far. We're not there yet, but we're getting there."
Cavender, a junior, shot a season-best 1-under 35.
Heinz was next with 41.
"Kenny probably could have had a 31 or 32 today if he had any putts that dropped," Hyatt said. "He was that sharp."
Ridgewood was led by Jordan Padova and Randy Watkins, who each shot 38.
Mitchell is 4-0. Ridgewood is 2-1.
GIRLS GOLF
- Wiregrass Ranch d. Hudson (forfeit)
At Pebble Creek, the Bulls were led by Nicole Esposito, who had 33 after five holes, at which time the match was halted due to time constraints. Cady Gonzalez and Taylor Upchurch each shot 34.
Hudson had only two players compete.
- Zephyrhills 196, Land O'Lakes 207
At The Groves, Laurren McLeod fired 44 to lead Zephyrhills past the Gators in a competitive match. The Bulldogs had three players shoot 49 or better, including Ashley Zullo, who finished at 48.
Allison Howard led Land O'Lakes with 46. Kasey Ellis added 48.
- Mitchell 189, Ridgewood (no team score)
At The Links, Victoria Kinney led the Mustangs with a career-best round of 42 (6-over) as Mitchell improved to 4-0. Sarah Yarbrough added a round of 43, which included two birdies.
"The two of them played well today," Mitchell coach Joe Castellano said. "They hit the ball straight and made a couple of putts."
VOLLEYBALL
- Zephyrhills d. Wiregrass Ranch 23-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-14
The Bulldogs overcame a rocky beginning to keep their record perfect.
They're now 4-0.
"It was a very slow start for us," Zephyrhills coach Tiffany Bibby said. "This is the second match in a row that's happened. We moved some kids around to different places and I feel like that contributed to it. It takes them a little bit to get in the groove of things."
