Eagles sweep Hurricanes
EAST LAKE - East Lake's Sara Rex spent the end of the summer and early part of this season nursing an injured right shoulder, forcing the natural righty to swing left-handed and making serving quite a sight.
"She actually served underhanded (with her right arm)," East Lake assistant Barb Small said. "It was pretty funny."
Palm Harbor U. likely wishes she would have stayed a lefty.
Swinging consistently with her right arm for one of the few times all season, Rex dominated the middle of the court as East Lake fought off three game points in the opener to sweep PHU 26-24, 25-16, 25-19 on Thursday night.
"The pain (in my shoulder) is off and on," Rex said. "Playing with my left was tough, But it definitely made me focus more. So it was good to (use my right)."
Rex still feels pain, but the senior was a pain in other places for PHU. Rex amassed 18 kills, five blocks and two aces.
Her talents were on full display during a sequence near the end of Game 2. Leading 18-15, the Eagles (3-1) went on a 6-0 run that started and ended with thunderous Rex kills. In between, she had another kill and two blocks for points.
"This was, by far, our best match of the year," Rex said. "We have some new people, but I can see we're starting to come together."
PHU (2-1) was its worst enemy. It led Game 1 24-21 before losing and had a bevy of errors.
"Way too many unforced errors," coach Tara Kuk said. "It's frustrating because we were blowing easy free balls."
The Hurricanes had 12 unforced errors in Game 1 and 28 for the match. Fittingly, match point came on a PHU error.
Natalie Mahy had a strong night for East Lakewith eight kills. Teammate Karly Gilchrist had 27 assists, and Andria Tagarelli had 31 digs.
Mallory Kiley, Cassandra Roy, Shea Fontana and Rachael Jelnicky had four kills for PHU.
- Indian Rocks Christian d. Calvary Christian 25-13, 25-11, 25-13
The Eagles remained unbeaten. Brianne Yeates led IRC with 12 kills, and Liz Zeitler recorded a team-high 15 digs. Jessica Jones added 10 digs while Liz Schaner finished 17-for-17 on service points with three aces.

John Valenty shot 1-over 37 to lead the Barons (3-0) at the Bayou Club. Still, coach Tim Moore said he expects more.
"I think this team has a shot at a state title," Moore said. "They are young and talented, but they haven't even come close to their potential yet."
Elliot Burke and brothers Devin and Derek Hernandez shot 40 for SPC.
