School budget's final hearing to be Monday

LARGO The final public hearing on the budget for the 2007-2008 Pinellas County school year will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the conference hall of the school administration building, 301 Fourth St. SW, Largo. School board members will be asked to approve a total millage rate of 7.731 mills, according to a school announcement. It is a decrease of 5.83 percent from the 2006-2007 millage rate of 8.210 mills. The board is expected to adopt the budget. For more information, call the school system at 588-6000. CLEARWATER Thefts at school cause lockdown A Clearwater middle school was closed Friday afternoon after two men were spotted stealing rims from a car at Gulf to Bay and Highland Avenue. Kennedy Middle School, 1660 Palmetto St., was locked down from 2:20 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. while Clearwater police searched for the two men, who ran after they were spotted. No one was in any immediate danger, police said. The lockdown is a routine precaution during any search, said Elizabeth Daly-Watts, the city's public safety spokeswoman. One suspect was apprehended Friday afternoon. Police are still searching for the other. The identity of the suspects has not been released. TARPON SPRINGS Writer DiSanza to speak at library Author and artist John DiSanza will be the guest speaker at an 11:30 a.m. Tuesday luncheon program at the Tarpon Springs library, 138 E Lemon St. The $15 fee includes a boxed lunch. DiSanza is the author of Johnny Saigon, a novel about the Vietnam War and the problems encountered by returning veterans. DUNEDIN Workshop will aid tutors of English The Literacy Council of Upper Pinellas is offering a free tutor training workshop starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Dunedin library community room, 223 Douglas Ave. The 20-hour workshop provides instruction in teaching individuals how to read, write and speak English. Clarification Jonathan Kremner pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return as well as selling an unregistered security. The FBI and IRS criminal investigation division investigated the case.
