Let's ban pit bull ownership
By MARY KOUSATHANAS
Published September 9, 2007
The mauling that occurred in Tampa in January could have had such a devastating ending if 9-year-old Dontae Vincent or his rescuer, Angel Perez, had died from the brutal attack on them by four pit bulls. They lived, but if they had died, the outcome would have been as it usually is: sadness, until the next attack and the next death. In February, we read of the attack on 2-year-old Ian Keo in Plant City while he was helping feed a family pit bull. Three years have passed since 8-year-old Anton Brown was killed by mixed-breed pit bulls in Tampa. In 1999 a 5-year-old girl in Citrus County was found dead, covered with bite marks from four pit bulls. Her body was in the Tsala Apopka lake, her ripped clothes on the banks. Mike Mailles of Tarpon Springs was attacked early this month by a pit bull that had just killed a miniature dachshund in his neighborhood. The stories continue to be featured by the newspapers, yet not one legislator has put forth legislation to ban these abhorrent animals in Florida. Communities such as Denver, Miami and the Canadian province of Ontario have responded to the growing danger of pit bulls by banning these animals. The most frequent victims of dog attacks are the most vulnerable members of our society: the very young and the elderly. According to a study of fatal dog attacks by all breeds from 1965 to 2001, children under 12 are victims in 79 percent of the attacks. People over age 65 are victims 12 percent of the time. The remaining 9 percent are between those ages. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, pit bulls accounted for 32 percent of the fatal dog attacks in the United States from 1979 to 1998. Do the victims have to be related to the people in charge of making laws before something is done? Any one of us could be a victim at any time. The state of Florida must act on behalf of our elderly population, as well as our innocent and defenseless children, by placing a ban on private ownership of this breed. The city of Denver has enacted a ban on pit bulls, but only after so many people were brutally maimed or killed. Action needs to be taken here before so many lives are profoundly affected. While many owners of pit bulls try to be responsible by keeping their dogs trained, neutered and under strict control, these precautions do not prevent some of these aggressive animals from turning on their masters or on a member of their family. We cannot go door to door and selectively say who is a responsible owner and who is not. Prevention is paramount. It is reasonable to have laws that prohibit lions and tigers as pets, as it is understood that these animals have innate instincts of aggression and tremendous power. So do pit bulls. It makes sense that pit bulls not be kept as pets. It is time to act to protect our citizens. Please enact a law banning pit bulls. The life you save may be your own. Mary Kousathanas lives in Clearwater.

Why don't we look at the different races of humans as well, and determine which races are physically stronger and statistically involved in more violent acts...does this idea seem intelligent or just as ridiculous as your comment!!

The best and only choice is clearly defined & easily enforced all-breed dangerous dog legislation that will be effective, workable and best serve public safety.

There is no other law which presumes criminality and restricts the freedom of citizens in the absence of any wrongdoing based solely on the physical appearance of universally legal, living property.

BSL makes law-abiding people into second-class citizens, and kills unoffending dogs solely on the basis of their shape.

If you are successful in baning bull dogs, you must then be prepared to ban the next alpha type dog that becomes popular with irresponsible ignorant owners. We have been through this with Dobies, Rotties and Shepards. Let's kill them all.

Own whatever dog you want - but if it gets aggressive towards me or any member of my family it dies. Afterwards I'll pay the fine for discharging a firearm in public and be home in time for dinner. If it HURTS anyone I love, I may put YOU in my sites

Here are some numbers from the ATTS, who gives the temperament tests for all breeds. As of Dec 2006 the average percentage of the American Pit Bull Terrier that passed the test was 84.1%. The American Staffordshire Terrier had an average of 83.9%...

Instead I suggest we ban breeders until the overpopulation problem is addressed. Fine breeders heavily, and those with unlicensed pit bulls even more. Pit bulls are abused and used by dealers and thugs in my neighborhood and you can't walk your dog.

Where are your studies on German Shepards and Rottweilers as they also have innate instincts of aggression and power. You said 32% were pit attacks. My odds look pretty good!

Her numbers are bad; the CDC doesn't even back them up anymore. They are skewed based on the fact that there is no "pit bull" breed. It's a generic term used to classify a few different breeds and mixes of the same. Duh! Do some REAL research Mary!

One of the best assistance dogs I have ever had the pleasure of meeting was a red nose American Pitt Bull Terrier. This is a wonderful breed with many good contributions to society. Any dog, provoked or unprovoked, has potential to do fatal damage.

I have had them for years and have enjoyed their love, playing, protection and naps. Ban the deed not the breed. I think there are far more important things to focus on, for instance, bettering pathetic attempts at pursuasive writing such as this.

You obviously have never had the pleasure of owning a pit bull. They are loving and loyal animals. Shame on you for lumping them into one category when you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Research something before you spout off!

people are not taught to respect an animals' space. many attacks are provoked because the animal sees the human as a threat. respect the animal. this woman should worry more about the daily animal abuse in this area. people are sick and cruel.
