Published September 9, 2007
DAYTONA BEACH - Cleveland McCoy passed for two touchdowns, propelling South Carolina State to a 24-13 win over Bethune-Cookman University on Saturday.
SCSU took the lead (1-0) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference standings.
McCoy threw an 11-yard strike to Spencer Miller early in the third quarter and a 49-yarder to Oliver Young in the fourth. McCoy was 10-for-18 for 88 yards and rushed seven times for 66 yards, as did Travil Jamison.
The Wildcats (0-1, 1-1) trailed 10-0 midway through the first quarter. Jimmie Russell pitched errantly toward Corey Council on an option at the 26-yard line, with SCSU's LaQuinn Ellerbe grabbing the ball and racing 23 yards to the 3-yard line. Jamison then scored for a 10-0 lead.
After falling behind 17-3, B-CU got within 17-13 on Council's 98-yard kickoff return and Lucas Esquivel's 27-yard field goal, both in the third quarter.
DELAWARE ST. 20, FAMU 7: Vashon Winton threw two touchdowns to lead the visiting Hornets.
Delaware State (2-0, 1-0 MEAC) led 10-7 at halftime and scored 10 in the third quarter to take control. Winton hit William Griggs on a 19-yard score on the first drive of the second half.
Albert Chester completed 19 of 34 passes for 172 yards and one touchdown for Florida A&M (0-2, 0-1 MEAC).
Florida A&M scored its only points on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Chester to Taj Jenkines in the second quarter to cap a 40-yard drive.
Oklahoma St. 42, FAU 6: Backup quarterback Zac Robinson passed for 250 yards and three touchdowns, two to Adarius Bowman, to topple visiting Florida Atlantic.
Oklahoma State (1-1) improved to 20-1 against current Sun Belt Conference schools. It was the third straight year the Cowboys beat FAU (1-1), with all the wins by at least 20 points.
Cowboys starting quarterback Bobby Reid had 32 yards rushing and went 2-for-5 passing for 7 yards in the first quarter.
OSU athletic department spokesman Kevin Klintworth did not know the reason why Reid was replaced.
