Defeat exposes all of the flaws
By GARY SHELTON, Times Staff Writer
Published September 10, 2007
SEATTLE - This is no way to start. Not with the quarterback on one knee with his wits scattered on the turf beneath him.
This is no way to start. Not with the tailback limping toward the locker room with dented ribs.
This is no way to start. Not with squandered opportunities and not with scattered penalties, not with missed blocks and not with uncovered receivers, not with an offense that cannot find the end zone and not with a defense that cannot stop the big play.
A season began painfully for Tampa Bay on Sunday afternoon. The Bucs lost to Seattle 20-6, and the further along the game went, the more it felt like reading the opening chapter of a long, depressing novel. Keep the tissues handy. Also, the gauze.
One game in, and Jeff Garcia is dizzy.
One game in, and Cadillac Williams is hurting.
One game in, and the heat on Jon Gruden has just been turned up a few more degrees.
For the Bucs, the real concern Sunday was not that they lost the game by two touchdowns. It wasn't that they never crossed the goal line. It wasn't even that the longer the teams played, the more Seattle took over.
For the Bucs, the real concern about Sunday's loss was the manner in which every weakness on the roster was exposed along the way. They do not have enough depth. They do not have enough playmakers. From the looks of it, they do not have enough padding.
If you were a bit concerned about the lack of depth before the game, you were probably scared silly 38 minutes into it. That was when Garcia and Williams were injured, six plays apart, and the B team took over. I don't know what you thought when you saw Luke McCown handing off to Earnest Graham in a four-point game, but it probably wasn't the same gleeful "it's my birthday" Seattle's linebackers had.
Given the house-of-cards-on-a-foundation-of-Styrofoam construction of the roster, how is this team ever going to hold up over a 16-game schedule? Williams is going to absorb a lot of punishment this year. From the looks of it, so is Garcia.
So much of Garcia's game is stretching the play to the last second, dodging in and out of danger, that he's bound to take some hits. That was the case in the third period, when he was knocked wobbly by the Seahawks' Leroy Hill.
At least Garcia was able to come back. Williams didn't, which pretty much shut down the ground game. Williams averaged 5 yards a carry Sunday, which isn't bad until you consider 20 of his 60 yards came on a meaningless play at the end of the first half.
To be honest, it wasn't as if the Bucs offense was ripping and snarling even with the two of them. If this was a brand new offense, the first observation is this: It needs more extra points.
Oh, the Bucs started well enough. In the first period, they had Seattle on its heels, and twice, they drove close to the goal line. But once there, the playmaking stopped. On a third and 1 at the 17, Garcia was sacked for a 3-yard loss. Field goal. On the next series, the Bucs had a third and 3 at the 14. Again, Garcia was hurried and threw incomplete. Field goal. And the Bucs were done.
"We need to be better than that," Garcia said. "We need to find ways to put touchdowns on the board instead of field goals."
"If we had scored touchdowns there," guard Davin Joseph said, "it could have been a different story."
Of course, if Ali McGraw had lived, you could say the same thing about Love Story. Six points isn't going to win very often in the NFL.
After the field goals, the offense dried up. The Bucs had nine more series. They picked up more than two first downs on only one and didn't make a play longer than 11 yards besides Williams' run.
As a season begins, that seems to be a problem in need of addressing. Besides Joey Galloway and Williams, who scares the opposition on this team? When the question is third and 6, what is the answer? As for the defense? Last year, the biggest problem was that it gave up too many big plays. Sunday? Ditto.
In other words, there are concerns. True, it's only one game, and Seattle is pretty good. On the other hand, the Saints and Rams and Panthers and Colts are pretty good, too, and that's only the schedule for the next month.
It's a tough way to start.
Unless the Bucs play better than this, it's going to be an early finish.

The 1st quarter gave me hope.
The rest was painfully entertaining.
I've got tickets for Sunday's home opener, and I am hyped!
This team has a chance to be good, or to be lucky. You can't say that for every team in the NFL.
It's just one game!

I'm still waiting for the offensive genius Gruden claims to be to show up. His offense looks the same as last year ( offensive ). Why don't you get an offensive coordinator with some vision and direction and you run the team and stay out the offense.

Ok.One more comment. Some of you are right that we should have accomplished more in the past couple seasons. But don't give up your support for the team. That is weak of character. Stay strong.See it thru until the ship crashes or we hold the trophy

Buc fans that are down on the team right now are just like the fringe Devil Ray fans. They will say that they supported the team from day one when things turn around. But,they will be lying to themselves and everyone else. Just be positive. GO BUCS!

The bottom line is until we get some real talent other than Galloway on this team no offensive system or coach is going to do any better. Since winning the SB the whole organazation has lost the urgency to win. Gruden must have talent to succeed!

Fans are passionate.. we want to win now! If you performed the way that these players have the last four year at your job you would be fired. PERIOD!

David: The players are paid quite well to play and have picked their trade. The coaches are paid well too. We plunk down our money to support this team and expect that after five years from a Super Bowl we would see a good product. Gruden must go!

Real fans stay true to their team and I hope this does weed out the fake fans. The season isnt built on 1 game & our schedule is favorbale. The seattle game was one of the harder games this season and I thought we competed until the injuries. GO BUCS

For a guy that needs to win now, it doesn't make much sense drafting a d-end who will MAYBE be good in 3 years. Same garbage. Need a new coach, new recievers, new o-line, and healthy simms

Yes Gary, the Buc's are flawed - as are most all NFL teams. Why are you focused ONLY on the negative though? We dominated the Hawks (a very good team) for the first half. Write about the flaws for sure but please provide a little balance too!

Oh my God, so much gloom and doom. The next thing you know is you'll be calling all Glazer/Gruden supporters enemy combatants of the state and throwing us in Guantanamo Bay. I thought that was a pretty good game. Guess I was by myself. Go Bucs!!!

Kevin, you are crazy! McKay is the reason why we are in this mess. The guy can't balance a checkbook. To more important matters, everyone on this blog think about Bills' player Everett and his family. Hope he can recover from his extensive injuries.

To all of you people that keep saying Gruden won with Tony's team, are you the same ones that wanted a new coach. Gruden did what Tony couldn't with the Bucs, and we would be in same position if Tony was here, it is a team that had to rebuild, OLD

We hired Bill Muir as a great offensive line coach and so far he has produced offensvie players. So what is the problem the players or the coach. Yes gruden won with a team Tony couldn't win the SB with. Then they got very old and salary cap strap

Tampa Bay fans are the worst in the NFL. Do you people give up your kids for adoption if they bring home one bad grade. Do you divorce your spouse if they overcook one meal. We have 2 division championships and a super bowl in 5 years. With gruden

For me there is only one flaw on this team, and that is "The players do not want to play for Gruden, they don't like him.

I think i was looking at a replay of one of the first games from last year and am disgusted. For the first half of the first quarter, I knew it couldn't last; Been there, done that! We've changed players now it's time to change "leaders", again!!!

Everyone is being too negative. I think the Bucs looked very good at the beggining of the game and they just need to look good for the rest. With Jeff Garcia, the Bucs have a much, much, MUCH better offence than they did last year.

Gaines going up against W. Jones in his first game is like Roddick playing Federer. Give the kid a break. We'll be ok, but GA needs to respond to this team to have any type of pass rush. Went to the game and it was fun. Hawks fans talking SB. Morons!

Gruden chased McKay out of town for his boy, Allen. I'll burn my Bucs gear if either of these guys is on the payroll going into "08. McKay could be pursuaded back if Chucky is gone.

Well, we were 0-1 in 2002. Defense looked much better yesterday. Offense needs to make some more big plays. Simms needs to get well soon because McCown does not feel pass rushers. Must weather first 6 games at 2-4 and hope rest of division sucks.

The defense is living in the past, did Derrick Brooks even record one tackle? Did Davin Joseph set a record for consecutive penalties? No sense getting a better pitcher (Garcia) if you don't have any catchers. Do we have any tight ends?
