With Bucs, one game in and all our trust has left us
Nobody looks good right now, not even the normally reliable ones on the Bucs.

Too much losing over the past few seasons has Bucs fans wondering if the team is actually getting better. Coach Jon Gruden thinks so: "I do see improvement. I think our football team sees improvement. We're a heck of a lot better team on opening day this year than we were last year."

The consequences of losing are many. It may begin on the scoreboard, but it persists far beyond.
It can cost a franchise revenue and value. It can cost careers and reputations. The collateral damage of losing can be far worse than the initial frustration it produces.
In this case, losing has cost the Buccaneers our trust.
For, this morning, we have none left to spare. Trust got sideswiped in 2003, trampled in '04 and backed over in '06.
And so, when the Bucs lost the season opener Sunday, there was no reservoir of trust to fall back on.
It took only one game to revive your worst fears from last season. The promise, the expectation, the joy of a new season was wiped out just that quickly.
Thus, everyone here is now a suspect.
One game in, and you wonder how Jon Gruden and genius ever came to be in the same sentence.
The great offensive overhaul of Tampa Bay is now in its sixth season, and still there is no expressway to the end zone. The Bucs have 20 offensive touchdowns in their past 17 games. Gee, imagine how bad it would be if the Bucs hadn't recently used first-round picks on a running back, a receiver and an offensive lineman.
One game in, and you wonder if Cadillac Williams borrowed Rocco Baldelli's vitamins.
No one should doubt that Williams is hurting this morning and will have a legitimate excuse if he is sitting out Sunday's game against the Saints. But it would mean Williams has missed five of his first 34 NFL games. For comparison's sake, LaDainian Tomlinson has missed one of his first 97 games.
One game in, and you wonder what the fuss was about when Bill Muir was hired.
His reputation was that of an offensive line Svengali. And in 2002, he coaxed a Super Bowl out of a motley crew that included rejects, a has-been and a never-was. But, since then, the O-line has been retooled over and over without any progress. The run-blocking is weak, the pass-blocking is mediocre, and the patience is gone.
One game in, and - God help us - you wonder if time has caught up to Derrick Brooks.
He is one of the greatest linebackers in the history of the NFL, but age is an inevitable factor. At 34, he can't be expected to be the player he was in his prime, but it was shocking to see Shaun Alexander run over Brooks twice in the same game.
One game in, and you wonder what Bruce Allen is doing here.
His drafts have not been stellar, and his free-agent signings have yet to produce much of an impact. And now, two weeks after Judge Allen exonerated him in a DUI case, David Boston's legal troubles have deepened.
One game in, and you wonder how long Jeff Garcia can survive.
Quarterbacks are like clay pigeons around here. Brad Johnson had a stress fracture in his back in 2002. Chris Simms banged up his shoulder in 2004. Brian Griese tore his knee up in 2005, and Simms had his spleen ruptured in 2006. As fearless and reckless as Garcia appears, his odds of surviving 16 games appear slim.
One game in, and you wonder if the Glazers have lost their passion to succeed.
Every year they raise ticket prices like clockwork, and yet they began this season about $15-million shy of the salary cap. Do you suppose some of that spare room in the payroll could have been used to supplement this team's depth? Makes you want to mark your dollar bills to see if they show up in the pockets of soccer players in Manchester.
So are all of these suspicions justified?
Probably not, but this is what losing has done to us.
It has made us question what we have long believed and doubt what we once were sure of. Because the Bucs have lost far more than they have won the past four seasons, it is difficult to muster much trust when Gruden stands before us and says this team is better in 2007 than it was in '06.
"I do see improvement. I think our football team sees improvement," Gruden said. "We're a heck of a lot better team on opening day this year than we were last year."
He may be right. He probably is. The problem is our trust has been shredded. Too many losses over too many seasons makes it hard to have blind faith when every instinct suggests otherwise.
The bottom line is this:
The Bucs are a last-place team.
They convinced us of that last season, and, until they prove differently, there is no reason to doubt it.

They didn't look like a last place team today against the Saints....did they John? You need to eat Crow after ripping the Buc's the way you did last week.

John is entitled to his opinion, but as a sportswriter I'd expect a bit more of an objective analysis. In the 4th Qtr we still had a chance to beat a very good Seattle team. It's a little soon to jump overboard at this point.

Dave, I agree that there are some serious issues of concern. My issue with this article is that it is an overreaction and focuses ONLY on the negatives. You've got to also look at the positives to do an honest evaluation.

Lets get real, u can't win games when instead of starting on the 45 u start on 10 or 49 start on 7, TD drives maybe? Still in that game against a SB team with 8 min left folks! mistakes cost us the game. I still see Buc's 11-5, 10-6 and playoff bound

John - you hit the nail right on the head. Their is a lack of passion w/ the ownership group. Looks like they have settled for a one & done Super Bowl run. The problem is huge Buc fans. The ownership group doesn't seem to care anymore.

This team is 5 good draft years away from being competitive again. Yes I said 5! Each year Gru-allen stay this team will remain 5 draft years away from being the team you once were.
The past few drafts have been a disaster. Buc's need new leadship!

I like your optimism Larry, but the 'hawks were sputtering in the first half, while the bucs were dying in the second. I felt so sorry for Brooks (and the Bucs)when the Hawks isolated him and used him.

I'm a diehard Bucs fan, but there is no strategy. Our best players are all too old, and there's no young cadre of talent to build on. Gruden needs a strong GM to keep him focused.

Don't buy into all this negative crap Buc's Fans! The Hawks are 17-3 at Qwest Field since the start of the 2005 season. We DOMINATED them much of the first half. That is a VERY positive sign Mr. Romano failed to mention.

If u didn't know the score of the game, you'd thought we lost 60-0! Did u take into account we were only down a TD when our QB left the field? Your the guy who's spills coffee on his tie going to work and tells his boss he now can't possible come in!?

Seventeen million under the salary cap. I say put Hugh Culverhouse's picture back up in the stadium again. He made more money than any other owner in football with the worst win loss record. He has to be smiling from wherever he is.

OK PEOPLE!!! Dungy tried 100 times to beat Philly. The keys to beat Philly in playoff were good play by o-line and Jurevicious. Sapp and def. MVP 2002 Brooks drafted by Wyche. Sup Bowl McCardell score twice; Brooks once; Dungy's team??? Is 0-1 folks!

All the respondents badmouthing the writer need to have your heads examined. Gruden/Allen have destroyed a Superbowl team. Romano only speaks the truth. How many more games before you too realize the 'Gruden Bucs' have sucked since the Superbowl win?

I am a lifer on the Bucs bandwagon, but the Bucs are broken. My expectations for the season are realistic. Bashing fellow fans for having realistic expectations rather than rose tinted is somehow better than bashing a broken team?

With editorial writers like Romano (Mr. Gloom) How do expect fans and player to keep a positive attitude. I wish he would move to another city, and try to destroy their hopes...

Is this another way of saying that everyone has jumped the bandwagon? They've been jumping for years now. And the Falcons are a last place team. Not us. And to Bob...unless columnists have it different, the headline is chosen by the editors.

John is just verbalizing exactly what ANY Bucs fan felt last Sunday. A new season starts and we are looking for something to give us HOPE...But, alas, we were pathetic on offense. We need a couple of playmakers at receiver and have only Galloway.

What's with all the panic? The Bucs were done in Sunday by poor special teams, injuries to 3 key players and uncharacteristic penalties on Davin Joseph...and might I add, against an excellent team. Don't be led astray by this smear campaign!

Excellent article. I happen to be of the opinion it is not about genius but leadership. Those under you buy into who you are, what you say and your character. Anything less equals less then 100%. It's not numbers of plays, its about execution!

Not only do we have the worst sports writers in the NFL, we have the worst fans. We gave a team, that no one gave us a chance in heck to beat, a very tough game. These writers and fans, constantly bashing the Bucs, are pathetic. Move to ATL or Indy!!
