Palm Harbor University became the first Pinellas County team to beat Clearwater as the Hurricanes defeated the visiting Tornadoes 21-25, 25-18, 25-15, 17-25 and 15-11.
"We made some silly mistakes like we did the other night against East Lake," PHU coach Tara Kuk said. "But once we got over the jitters, it all came together."
Mallory Kiley led three Hurricanes in double-digit kills with 18, followed by 14 from Margo Sultenfuss and 11 from Rachael Jelnicky. Kuk said the Hurricanes' attack benefitted from the diversity.
"One particular player didn't carry us," she said. "Everyone contributed and that was good to see."
PHU's Cassie Wilkinson finished with 42 assists, while Jelnicky and Kiley had six and three blocks, respectively. Megan Aguirre led Clearwater with 14 kills, Kristi Posnak chipped in with 10 and Channing Salava had eight aces.
Clearwater and PHU made impressive showings over the weekend at two of the stronger statewide tournaments. The Tornadoes went 4-1, finishing fifth at the Gator Town Invitational while PHU finished seventh at the Winter Park/Lake Highland Invitational, losing to two-time defending 1A state champion Orangewood Christian.
No title defense for 'Canes
The 24th Annual Keswick Christian Invitational starts Thursday at the Crusaders' gym, but the reigning champs will not be there to defend. Palm Harbor will skip the 16-team field after setting a tournament record with its fourth consecutive title last season.
The Hurricanes defeated Indian Rocks Christian 25-18, 25-20 in the best-of-three format title match last year. There is pool play on Thursday and Friday before the championship round Saturday.
