Lineman cited for wrecking Spires' SUV
By MIKE BRASSFIELD, Times Staff Writer
Published September 13, 2007
TAMPA - A Bucs backup offensive lineman crashed a teammate's Porsche SUV into a classic muscle car parked in a driveway early Monday, authorities said.
Tackle Donald Penn was cited in the crash, in which he was driving a 2005 Porsche Cayenne owned by defensive lineman Greg Spires, according to an accident report from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
No one was hurt in the wreck, which occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on S Lagoon Street in the Town 'N Country area west of Tampa International Airport.
Penn failed to stop at an intersection, went off the road and into a yard and slammed into a red 1965 Oldsmobile 442, the Sheriff's Office report said. The collision knocked the Oldsmobile into the house at 8807 S Lagoon St., causing minor damage to a wall. The Porsche SUV also crashed into a parked truck.
Both the Olds and the truck are owned by the family that lives in the house. According to the accident report, Spires lives nearby.
Penn, 24, was cited for careless driving and failure to obtain a Florida driver's license.
The crash report does not indicate toxicology tests were done or further action will be taken, sheriff's spokesman J.D. Callaway said.
Penn is in his second NFL season out of Utah State.

Gruden is just jealous that the Bengals are stealing all the character headlines. He will catch up in no time. I hope you're watching the Colts, Glazer.

Good point Bob. If we were winning character would not matter. Sapp wasnt exactly a nice guy but we embraced him when he was getting those sacks...

I wouldn't be so quick to judge this one. I think it he was just driving home after the game. I thought I remember Gruden sayin gin the press conference that the got home at 3:30am. I believe he just borrowed Spires car to drive home.

He's a seldom-used backup, so look for Allen to waive him and make some kind of a "we won't tolerate this" speach. (Then go find some felon that no other team would touch, to take the roster spot)

Who are you guys kidding! If the Bucs were undefeated you would'nt give a hoot about character! You are the same people that blasted Dungy and Mackay when they lost to Philly!

Really glad no one was hurt. I'm more upset about that red 1965 Oldsmobile 442, what a sweet car.

I see people questioning why he was out at 4:30am. Uh, it's because they just flew in from Seattle. I know for a fact they didn't get into TIA until the wee hours. It's okay for these guys to drive home isn't it?

A Porsche SUV? Those 2 should not be in the same sentence. I shake my head evertime I see that or a BMW stationwagon. I've lost some respect for Spires

penn got off light. should have also gotten an excessive speed in a residential area ticket. Also because of the nature of this kind of driving incident, impairment tests , blood and urine samples should have been administered immediately

Tim..You are right on the mark. I am so sick of these Gruden 'players;. Jon must be heartbroken that Boston will no longer be with the team. Jon seems to just love these types of players. I will be so happy when Gruden, too, is shown the door.
