Steadfast Brooks ignores his critics
"Other than (two plays Sunday), I think I played pretty good."

Derrick Brooks says the Bucs' tackling Sunday could have been better but it will improve as the season progresses.

TAMPA - If you want to make Derrick Brooks raise an eyebrow about 3 inches, tell him how some believe his play has fallen.
If you want to put the leader of the Bucs defense on the defensive, suggest he got run over twice Sunday by Seattle running back Shaun Alexander.
Try to suggest at 34 he has lost a step, and he won't give an inch.
"I don't think I have (lost a step)," Brooks said. "But ... that's my opinion. I respect everyone else's opinion as a human being, but to me, it's all subjective. That's why I really don't get into the argument or buy into it when someone says somebody else lost a step."
As he dressed for practice at his locker Wednesday, his performance in the season-opening 20-6 loss was unbuttoned. Yes, he missed an open-field tackle on Alexander, who rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries for the Seahawks.
No, he didn't miss two tackles of Alexander. On the second, he knocked him out of bounds and was credited with one of his eight stops.
The lowlight was when Brooks lost the football trying to cover running back Maurice Morris. The 10-time Pro Bowl linebacker drifted to the inside, creating separation and an easy 34-yard touchdown that made it 20-6 with 7:55 left in the game.
By Brooks' memory, it's the only time he has been beaten deep
"I think I did pretty good, outside of losing the ball on the touchdown and missing the tackle in the open field," he said, pulling a shirt over his head. "Other than that, I think I played pretty good.
"For every bad thing that people say, I can turn around and give them two or three good (plays) that I had. But that's not going to get us anywhere. That's not going to get us a win."
Brooks has heard this all before. Even though he has another season on his contract, he has been made to feel like it's fourth and 12 in his career. Instead of being recognized as one of the best at his position, Brooks has to prove he is the best linebacker on his team.
But there are just as many who don't understand why anyone would pull on Superman's cape.
"He made some good plays, too," coach Jon Gruden said. "When you get opened up sometimes, you're going to be vulnerable to a great player in space. Derrick Brooks is the least of my concerns."
Overall, the defense hung with the Seahawks. Both big pass plays - the Morris touchdown and a 49-yarder to Bobby Engram - came with Brooks and middle linebacker Barrett Ruud in coverage, respectively.
"You recognize they're going to make plays. They get paid, too," Brooks said. "But you do your best to eliminate them."
Brooks admits the Bucs tackling could have been better, but it's not unusual.
"We don't play a lot in the preseason and rightfully so because of the injury factor," Brooks said. "Most defenses start out tackling slow because their starters don't get a lot of (playing time). Probably around Week 3, you're tackling better. That's when teams start to pick it up."
In the end, Brooks might be a victim of his career numbers. It's hard to know if you're slowing down when there's nobody running with you.
"There's no bigger critic of me than myself," Brooks said. "And all you can do is go out there and show it. You're not going to talk a play. You have to go out there and make a play. That's my attitude.
"No matter what I've done, I always feel like I could've done something better. If a team gets a yard, I'm going to think I could've done something to stop it."

Once he's fired, you can wait a couple games into next year and start blaming the new coach. Fire Cowher, fire cowher!!!

Of course Brooks has lost a step,he's in his 12th season. Who hasn't by that point? Still,he's a great player. If anything else,he can use this to motivate himself. Of course, as usual...this HAS to be Gruden's fault.

Actually the Bucs D played well, I would like to give a shout to Tanard Jackson for great play. The offense doesn't need to leave the defense out on the field too doggone long all the time...offense needs to generate more.

I wish more people would talk about the safty play. I know Jackson missed a tackle on a All-Pro RB. Did anyone see what Allen did on the goal line play? Go through the game pic and look how close JP was to the ball on the deep pass got to make a play

That passing play deep had nothing to do with Brooks. The whole point of Cover 2 is that nothing should get away from the 2 deep safety positions. Where was Allen or Phillips? Its not the first time those two were off sniffing daisys.

Being on the field 40 minutes per game is bad for any defense. Start the 2 young safeties and get a GM that can assemble an O and see how D does. Gruden and Allen need to go if Bucs lose more than 8 games this year. Send Tony your ring, Chucky.

Brook's speed looked great. He made a couple of plays, such as the one bumping Seattle's RB out of bounds, that was like Lightening. Overall the D didn't play well. Typical Bucs of late.

Bringing Brooks out on passing downs doesn't make since. That is where he is best. If anything people should be worried about it is his tackling.

How in the world can you say Derrick Brooks has lost a step. In fact after a decade plus he is still going. He had done a great job all these years and he will decide when it is time to stop. And when Dec 9 in Houston I will be there supporting him.

The bears sure as heck didn't start slow. I'm getting sick of the excuses from this defense.

Brooks will be fine - he is an excellent team leader - but it would be nice to use June is passing downs - else why did we spend the money to bring him in

Brooks isnt the problem like everyone says its the sorry O we have. But give them a chance to get it together. Ruud did a good job and so did brooks but we need PRESSURE to help them. Watch the Indy vs N.O. game. Indy got PRESSURE. If we dont well...

Derrick made no excuses, he admitted losing the ball which led to the TD. "Fans" who question Brooks are barking up the wrong tree. Bruce Allen has assembled a low-talent team and Jon Gruden does a poor job with what he has to work with.

When the offense starts scoring real points every week then I'll blame Brooks. The Seattle offense gets paid big bucks too. Any how that was week one of 16 all you jumping off the bang wagon fans need to calm down. Sheesh!!!!

Brooks and the defense is not the reason they lost. Gruden and sucky offense, still, is the reason. Thank goodness Hockey is here! Go Bolts and fire Gruden!

Offensive success is about matchups. Morris went in motion to see if he would draw a linebacker, and he drew Brooks. Hasselbeck saw this and when Morris got behind Brooks it was an easy TD. Safety should have been over the top, not Brook's fault.

They should have audible out of man coverage on that play to Morris. They ran that motion a few times but we were in zone so the mismatch was inside with a WR on June. Barber covered Morris. I still believe in Brooks.

I don't trade Brooks for June or anyone else. He is the rock that Monte's defense is built upon. If John Lynch were still here he'd still be in there. Bruce Allen doesn't have a clue.

Aw come on Brooks...Don't tell me you need 3 weeks into the season to start tackling. After all you've done for us all these years, don't stoop as low as Gruden with all his excuses. NO MORE EXCUSES. The whole team needs to execute better.

Brooks is a legend of the game, but when I saw those two plays on Sunday I was stunned when No. 55 stood up because they looked like they were from a rookie. That said if Bruce Allen cut him he may still have 3 more Pro-Bowls left for the Broncos...

I still believe that Brooks can compete but they need to experiment with June on passing downs, especially this next game if the LB is covering someone like Reggie Bush, i dont even want to think of seeing Brooks get out juked by Bush.

It is incredible that this is even a story. What about the safeties? We have had problems at that position since we lost Lynch and Jackson. There should have been a safety covering the deep. Isn't that the theory of the "bend but don't break" zone?

It's sad seeing DB playing poorly. He did play pretty well early on during the Seattle game. Although, he kept on trying to tackle Alexander high and bounced right off of him. He looked like a fish out of water covering Morris.

These fair weather "Fans" need to lay off Brooks as he is the least of our concerns. The guy played a solid game. The deep play was on coach as no LB should be covering a running back 40 yds downfield. He is getting older but still one of the best

We wouldn't be having this conversation if the offense kept the ball a little longer or scored touchdowns, not field goals.

Derrick is Mr. Buc, obviously he's not the same player physically, but there's no doubt he still the leader of the defense. I think we would be better with our present personnel if Monte switched to the 3-4 and rotated the interior lineman frequently

Get off Brooks' back. I agree with Gruden. He's the least of the team's concerns. What about special team penalties? What about a high school offense that couldn't even score with Courtney Love? 55 Rocks!

Let Brooks and company play counter to an offense that doesn't go three and out all day and then check how they perform. Superman could not sustain power playing opposite the bucs inept play calling and offensive lack of potency.
