'Disappointed' Bucs cut ties for good with Boston

General Manager Bruce Allen said the move to release David Boston was made solely because of the need to bring back Mark Jones, the Bucs' punt returner the past two seasons.

TAMPA - The David Boston project is officially over.
He was released by the Bucs on Wednesday after they reached an injury settlement with the 29-year-old receiver, who was arrested last month and charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence.
While Boston was released one day before the 2006 opener and brought back to compete this fall, general manager Bruce Allen said the team has "moved on."
Allen said the move was made solely because of the need to bring back return man Mark Jones, who signed Wednesday. Jones, the team's punt returner the past two seasons, was released Sept. 1, when final roster cuts were made.
A police-administered urine test after Boston's arrest Aug. 23 in Pinellas Park showed high levels of the drug GHB in his system.
"When we read the results, we were disappointed because it reflected poorly on David," Allen said. "We don't like being associated with that. But that's really for David to contest."
GHB, or gamma hydroxybutyrate, has euphoric, sedative and anabolic (bodybuilding) effects. It depresses the central nervous system depressant and was widely available over the counter during the 1980s and until 1992. In lower doses, GHB causes drowsiness, dizziness, nausea and visual disturbances.
Meanwhile, it appears the Bucs will let the court and NFL administer any potential punishment to tight end Jerramy Stevens, 27, who was convicted Friday in Arizona of driving with a blood-alcohol level three times that at which the state presumes impairment.
Stevens, scheduled for sentencing Oct. 2, played at Seattle two days after his conviction.
Allen deflected questions about the character of the team.
"I would say the character of this team is outstanding," he said. "As far as giving people an opportunity, we do that for everyone. ... I don't think it's wrong to give somebody an opportunity to succeed as long as they abide by our rules."

"by Tim 09/13/07 05:29 PM - Remember the Bucs DID NOT SCORE A SINGLE TD in 3 playoff games when Dungy was coach. "

The U.S.A. channel welcomes characters, maybe the Bucs games should be telecast there instead of Fox.

All you fans that praised Dungy were the same ones that called for his head when he was here. I'm tired of all these fair weather fans. Remember the Bucs DID NOT SCORE A SINGLE TD in 3 playoff games when Dungy was coach.

Why not played Stovall this week opposite og Galloway. Also Release Stevens also Bring RB Darby on Board to
beefup the Special teams and running backs. Darby with a little luck will be a full in the future with Tampa, if they are wise.

You guys are all idiots. Every team has character issues! Look at the "perfect Patriots." They taunt the Chargers at midfield in the playoffs, and then open the season cheating. Golden Boy had an illegitimate kid. Gruden and Allen aren't babysitters.

"We don't like being associated with that" and "I would say the character of this team is outstanding" You may be a lousy GM Mr. Allen, but you are good for a laugh. Bucs and Character? That is hilarious. I feel sorry for Brooks and Barber.

Leave it to this so-called GM Allen saying the character of this team is outstanding. IMO neither he nor Gruden have much character, as is reflected in so many boneheads on the Bucs. Give me a man of Dungys character anytime.

These guys aren't interested in character, they're interested in stadium capacity and promotions, are you kidding me...This isn't the Tony Dungy show any more...that's just a rarity. The Bucs are more typical of these animals.

I think they need to stop worrying about players personal lives and fix the head coaching and the general management,it was a sad day when coach Dungy was released,as well as the rest of the team he built that both Allen and Gruden have destroyed.

Allen deflected questions about the character of the team???? Stephen, have any family members that wouldn't be voted human being of the decade? You hacks continue to question character, how about the attack on Allen's and Gruden's personal character
