Today's Letters: Discipline case should be quick
By LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published September 13, 2007
Fight over iPod hits sour note Sept. 12, story
This one's simple enough: The father should profusely apologize to the vice principal, the girl should serve out her suspension and be appropriately disciplined at home, and there should be no investigation wasting taxpayer money and necessary attention to more important things.
Teachers and administrators have enough trouble keeping discipline in our schools that they have to be demoralized and undermined by incidents such as this one.

VFW post active in charity efforts
Our VFW Holiday Post 10167 has never seen better days. I am president of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Holiday Post 10167 and I have been a member here for the past 18 years.
Our commander, Harvey Wilcox, and his fellow officers have the utmost respect for our ladies auxiliary and are most supportive of us. All we have to do is ask for help and they are there, no matter what the request.
We are in no way unable to have fundraising affairs and have been most successful in our efforts. The past year the combined efforts of the VFW Post 10167 and its auxiliary have raised over $20,000 for various charities such as the Pasco County Holiday Recreation Center, Pasco County Sheriff's Youth Ranch, Operation Uplink (phone cards for overseas service personnel) scholarships for local schools, donations to veterans hospitals, cancer aid and research, assistance to needy veterans and their families, Operation Shoebox and Alzheimer's Family Foundation.
Our members have volunteered more than 43,000 hours helping veterans and their families volunteering at schools, hospitals, nursing homes, etc.
Our commander and his fellow officers have served our country proudly, fighting overseas to keep our country safe. Remember, this is the land of the free because of the brave.

Hundreds help with post's work
The letter writer was a good member of our auxiliary and did many good things.
She was right in one respect that the post she praised is a good post as well as many other posts in the United States. They are there to help and perform many services for their members and their communities.
Our ladies auxiliary at 10167 also does many good things both for our VFW and our community. We do many projects for police, visit nursing homes to play bingo with the patients and do much aid for cancer research.
As president of the auxiliary for two years, I was awarded first place in my first year and second place in my second. These state awards are not given if an auxiliary sits back and does nothing. I am very proud of these awards.
Our great honor guard is asked to perform at services all over the county. When our honor guard stands guard over a flag-covered casket and gives a 21-gun salute and folds our beautiful Stars and Stripes into a three-pointed flag and presents it to the fallen comrade's family, it is a most honorable and touching moment. I know because I was one of those families. I watched my mother's pain when she lost her first-born, 18-year-old son defending our great country.
Our VFW Post 10167 is the best because we are family and families stick together. Our post has 800 members and our auxiliary has 400 members. With membership like this, you can draw your own conclusions.

Kittens shouldn't be dumped
This is for the person or persons who left two 6-week-old kittens behind the Publix store in Bayonet Point. My husband, who is an employee there, went out back to unload a truck and heard meowing under a Dumpster. He found two gray and white tiger-striped kittens, and they are cute as a button.
He called me to come and rescue them. He didn't want them to get run over by a truck or eaten by a wild animal. I then took them straight to the ASPCA on Congress Street, which refused to help these two baby kittens. My 5-year-old child is allergic to cats so I explained my situation and was told they couldn't help. This is from an organization that cares for animals. They acted as if the animals were mine and I needed a place to dump them.
I then took them home and fed and cared for them for three days out of my garage. I made some phone calls and came across a lovely woman named Marsha from Safe Haven, a rescue mission. She traveled from Holiday and met me at the Olive Garden to pick them up. I gladly gave a small contribution to help the kittens care and to be placed for adoption.
For the person/persons who abandoned these kittens: Next time call animal rescue for phone numbers instead of leaving these precious babies in harm's way to fend for themselves.

Recall of official has support
I am a Dade City resident and I strongly support the effort to recall Camille Hernandez.
I don't support or endorse her actions as a commissioner and believe that she should leave office.

Mike..the AP didn't twist her arm. According to the original article, he grabbed her wrist as she was attempting to grab the iPod. I agree wholeheartedly with Dr. Yacht on this one! The only assault here is by the dad on our intelligence.

Grabbed wrist or whatever makes no difference - the kid had it coming and the parents would be smart to let her learn her lesson and move on. Perhaps a little more discipline at home would have prevented this sort of behavior.

I agree with Mr. Yacht up to a point. If the vice principal did twist her arm he should be charged and the deputy needs to be removed and replaced. The law is the law.
