Rep. Mike Davis, a Naples Republican who was a champion for affordable housing, died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2007) after a struggle with cancer.
Rep. Davis, 60, planned to serve through his term in 2008 but recently announced plans not to seek re-election.
"My son Christian and I wish to express our gratitude for all the prayers and well wishes that have been offered up for Michael," his wife, Patricia, wrote in e-mail to legislators.
Rep. Davis was first elected to the House in 2002 and later became the majority whip. He was a point man on affordable housing legislation.
"Mike was a private person, devoted to his family, who carried the burden of his battle with disease with true dignity," said House Speaker Marco Rubio, R-Miami. "We will greatly miss our colleague and friend and send our deepest sympathies to his family." The House is planning a memorial service.
Rep. Davis' family plans Mass on Saturday.
A special election will have to be called to replace Rep. Davis, who represented parts of Collier and Broward counties.
