How many people in this country are compulsive gamblers?
There are no hard numbers, but organizations that study this issue suggest as much as 1.6 percent of the adult population has a gambling problem. Since there are about 220-million people over 18 in this country, that would put the number of problem gamblers at about 3.5-million. It's estimated that less than 10 percent seek help. Gamblers Anonymous, which held its first meeting 50 years ago today, has a help line: 888 424-3577.
