Memory-making marathon to benefit riverview girl

BRANDON

The Brandon Elks Lodge will hold a 13-hour scrapbooking marathon Saturday to help raise money for Savannah Anselmo. The 9-month-old Riverview girl was born with a rare liver disease, biliary artesia, and needs a liver transplant.

The all-day event includes classes, shopping, prizes, snacks, lunch and dinner. Participants can register online until noon today or register at the door. Recommended donations are $40 before the event or $45 at the door. Half-day registration is also an option.

Proceeds will go to Savannah's Children's Organ Transplant Association fund.

The fundraiser is from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Brandon Elks Lodge, 800 Centennial Lodge Drive. For more information, go to www.miracle4savannah.com.

Comedy club opens along W Lumsden Road

Looking for a few laughs this weekend? Check out the grand opening of Bonkerz Comedy Club, 779 W. Lumsden Road.

The club is part of a national chain with more than 20 locations. The club's flagship operation is at Universal Studios City Walk entertainment district in Orlando.

Bonkerz features touring standup comedians at weekly shows every Thursday through Saturday. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the shows start at 9.

After the show, the venue transforms into a nightclub featuring current music plus hits from the 1980s and '90s.

The comedy shows are for adults only, but each Wednesday is "Magical Family Night," featuring international magicians and open to all ages.

Grants mean software, furniture for center

Kids In Balance, a therapeutic learning center in Riverview, was recently selected to receive grants from the Glazer Family Foundation and Sweetbay supermarkets.

The grants will be used for new computer software, child-friendly furniture and other equipment.

Kids in Balance provides physical therapy classes for toddlers, teenagers and all ages in between. Offerings include language, balance, communication and social and handwriting skills.

Hospital's gala mixes diamonds with denim

South Florida Baptist Hospital will host its annual Diamonds and Denim Gala from 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 27 at the new Strawberry Festival expo building in Plant City.

Attendees could win a diamond ring donated by Brown's Jewelry of Plant City. Attire for the evening is "dressy denim."

The event benefits the hospital's community outreach programs.

Tickets are $50 per person and sponsorships are available.
