Bulls switch QBs
In a surprising move just two games into Wiregrass Ranch's first varsity season, coach Ricky Thomas said he will start freshman James Tringali at quarterback tonight against Berkeley Prep, sending junior Angel Rodriguez to the bench. Thomas said he was hoping to light a fire under Rodriguez, the team's starter last year during the JV season. The coach said his decision to start Tringali had nothing to do with Rodriguez's performances in the first two games but other issues he declined to discuss. Tringali is 6-3, 160 pounds and one of the smartest kids in school, Thomas said. He started the first two JV games this season.
Twin power on tap
Although he never coached them in two stints at Weightman Middle School, Thomas remembers Julian and Jordan Crockett well. "They were extremely fast, I remember that," Thomas said. Now he has to figure out a way to stop them. The Crockett twins, now juniors, star for Berkeley Prep. They each had an interception in Week 1, and both scored touchdowns last week for the Bucs. Although they still live in Wesley Chapel, Thomas said, they drive to Tampa each day for school.
Clower pulls ahead in QB battle
Turns out Pasco sophomore D.J. Clower is developing into the Pirates' primary quarterback. Clower, who transferred from Zephyrhills, has thrown for 199 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions and made 21 of 29 pass attempts. Pirates junior Josh Johnson, who rotates with Clower, has accepted his role as a utility player moving between receiver and running back.
Reynolds still questionable
Promising Wesley Chapel freshman Keenan Reynolds has practiced the past two weeks without contact, nursing a groin injury, and is a game-time decision in tonight's Pasco game. Reynolds had nine carries for 63 yards in a 28-12 victory over Wiregrass Ranch.
