Soccer team big winner in essay contest

Nicole Misener of the U15 West Pasco Soccer Club gave her team a whole new look. Soccer outfitter Eurosport, along with Hummel, sponsored a contest and the 14-year-old Misener won. The West Pasco team received jerseys, backpacks, warm-ups and soccer balls. The squad will be filmed Thursday at Mitchell field for a feature on Fox Soccer Channel, which will air at a later date.

Contestants had to write a 100-word essay on why their team should get new gear, plus submit a team photo and a roster. Misener thought outside of the box and made a "team box" to woo the judges. She put pictures of her team on the outside of the box, coaches on the inside and wrote inspirational quotes from soccer players on the flaps. She then filled the box with stuffed soccer balls and the essay.

FOOTBALL:The New Port Richey Buccaneers and the Wesley Chapel Vipers will square off Saturday for the Bucs' homecoming games. There will be a full schedule from the little guys at 8:30 a.m. all the way up to varsity playing at 4 p.m. The games will be at Schwettman Educational Center.

CHEERLEADING PROGRAM: The All American Youth Activities, Cheer America and Holiday Recreation Complex are sponsoring a cheerleading program for boys and girls ages 5 to 15. Cost per week, per session is $6. The complex is at 2830 Gulf Trace Boulevard in Holiday. For information, call 727 943-5843 or 942-7439. Sessions are every Tuesday beginning next week; classes meet at the following times: Ages 5-6 from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Ages 7-9 from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Ages 10-15 from 8 to 9:45 p.m.

FLAG FOOTBALL: The deadline for registration for youth flag football (ages 7-12) is Wednesday. Games are Thursday evenings at the Pasco County Parks and Recreation Holiday Complex at 2830 Gulf Trace Blvd., Holiday. Cost is $30 and the evaluation date is Sept. 22.
