Coming off one of the biggest wins in recent memory, host Canterbury beat Academy at the Lakes 25-14, 25-16, 25-27, 25-19 on Thursday.
"(Academy at the Lakes) was a very scrappy, unpredictable team," Canterbury coach Dave Smith said. "They were coming over the net on their first and second hits, and it caught us a little flat-footed at times."
Abby Jay (six kills), Erika Whitman (six aces) and Macey Hall (nine assists) led the Class A Crusaders, who won a five-game match at 3A St. Petersburg Catholic on Wednesday.
"The girls simply refused to lose that fifth game," Smith said of the SPC match. "They were diving on top of each trying not to let balls hit the floor."
Caitlyn Lincoln had nine kills and six blocks against SPC, playing what Smith called "the game of her life." Emma Brody had six kills, Mansie Hough 11 assists and Nina Gomez five aces.
"It was just a hard-fought, well-played high school volleyball match," Smith said. "You hated to see either team lose."
- Keswick Christian Invitational
Keswick Christian, Northside Christian, Shorecrest and Indian Rocks Christian went 2-0 in pool play on the tournament's first day. The 16-team tournament continues today with more pool play before wrapping up Saturday with the final at 5:45.
- East Lake d. Lakewood 24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 15-10
Sara Rex had a match-high 24 kills and Ashley Lawrence 15 and Andria Tagarelli had seven aces for the visiting Eagles.
The Spartans were paced by Taylor Whaley's16 kills, 31 assists and three aces. Michelle Scannell added 23 assists and four aces.
"It was a tight match all the way around, and both teams played great," Lakewood coach Sean O'Flannery said. "We had our opportunities, and I thought being at home, we should have capitalized on that momentum. Just because it's a North County team doesn't mean we're scared of them."
The Spartans get another shot at a North school in Palm Harbor U. at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home.
-Girls Golf
Northside Christian shot a blistering 151 to defeat Tampa Prep (206) and Clearwater Central Catholic (223) at Bardmoor. All five Mustangs shot 44 or better.
