The Wellswood All-Stars drew talent from around the county, including Seffner's Ty Cherry, to make a successful run to the Cal Ripken World Series.
After winning state and regional titles, the team battled 16 national and international teams at the World Series on Aug. 11-18. The tournament is named for and operated by the baseball Hall of Famer who played for the Baltimore Orioles.
Wellswood reached the U.S. World Championships by winning four of five games in pool play. It avenged its only loss with a 2-0 win over Lexington, Ky.
Cherry combined with Shane Jeffcoat for the shutout and also drove in one of the team's two runs. Christian Arroyo led the team in hitting with a .350 average. Jeffcoat, Andres Leal and Daniel Portales also hit over .300 for Wellswood.
Mexico beat the Tampa team 7-0 in the international championship game, with Cherry striking out six in four innings in a losing effort.

Christine, you are not correct. You probably say this because your son is not talented enough to play at Wellswood, and would also like youth sports not to keep score. These kids work hard and deserved to be in the championship, just as they will d

Some of us know that this team was "Cherry" picked to make a run at the Cal Ripken World Series. They were allowed to play as a Cal Ripken All Star Team dispite their only known status as a AAU travel team. Congrats to kids, shame on parents!!!!!!!

The all tournament team was named recently for the 2007 Cal Ripken W.S. The following players from Wellswood (Tampa)were selected by position:
SS Christian Arroyo, 3B Andres Leal and P Shane Jeffcoat. These Tampa boys should be celebrated.
