Re: Group aims at greening of county Sept. 8 story
Thank you for getting story out
As the media representative for the Hernando County Green Party, I would like to thank the Times for getting the information out about our environmental actions. I'd like to insert one word into the great story by correspondent Beth Gray. That word would be in the second paragraph: "Theirs is not ONLY a political movement, but a belief that people should at least work to protect the environment, if not make it better."
We also thank the Times for its service to the pubic by getting the word out about our educational (yet entertaining) movies we show at the new library's wonderful facility.
It's more important than some may think to "act locally while thinking globally." We are definitely a political group promoting "grassroots Democracy' and "social justice." When we encourage people of the county to shop local and to use "ecological wisdom" it is directly from out of our Ten Key Values. More of our values are "Future Focus" and "Responsibility." We do not subscribe to the current administration in Washington's fear tactics, its ongoing plans to dumb-down the public, and wars over resources. We have been steadfast in our peace assertion and the need for better ideas.
Another comment on the ecological topic: On the bigger scale, an aspect we should all consider strongly is the source of our energy. We should wean ourselves from "fossil fuel folly" and consider simple logical facts. If we would not, knowingly, put nuclear waste, coal, gas and oil into our bodies, why would we use them as energy sources?
Other countries are successfully becoming clean energy independent, so it can be done. Wind, solar, hydro and more are nondamaging to our health and have been used successfully. We need to demand that our congress members take action on de-funding the oil, coal and nuclear industries and put all of that money into renewable energy.
Would that we could stop in and visit Sen. Mel Martinez, Sen. Bill Nelson and Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite personally to tell them things like this. Nevertheless, they can all easily be reached by going to the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. I call this number and ask for one of the above leaders. The switchboard operator connects me, I make my comment to the aide who takes the call, I hang up and hit redial until I've reached all three. What could be easier? It takes 10 minutes out of your day and I can tell you (because I have lobbied in Washington, D.C.) they respond best to phone calls because writing and reading letters is too time-consuming and e-mails are not as highly regarded as personal messages by phone and regular mail.
Participatory democracy is a good thing.
Jennifer Sullivan, Spring Hill
Veterans' obits need more space
I would like to know when your newspaper will change your policy regarding veterans' obituaries. You give several lines free, but then charge.
Why don't you allow the grieving families free space to include the service the veteran was in? Most families cannot afford the extra charges.
Please give this last respect to our veterans.
I am a chaplain with a veterans organization. Thank you, and God bless our servicemen and women.
Charles Haig, Spring Hill
