Mitchell at Countryside, volleyball, 7 p.m.
Mitchell has never defeated Countryside in volleyball, but the Mustangs are riding high at 6-1 and hope that maybe, just maybe, tonight might be the first. They'll have to overcome junior outside hitter Madison Truluck, who made Times' first-team all-Pinellas County last season as a sophomore. Countryside is undefeated in Class 6A, District 7.
Showdown will have to wait
Those looking forward to watching Mitchell square off against one of the two remaining undefeated volleyball teams in the area may have to wait. A scheduling conflict has forced the Mustangs to find a new date for its match against Zephyrhills, originally scheduled for Wednesday.
As of Monday evening, Mitchell coach Keith Paulk was waiting to hear back from the FHSAA to find out if he could move the game to Friday. The problem? The game would be the Mustangs' fourth this week, and FHSAA rules stipulate that a team may play no more than three.
"They made us play last year," Paulk said. "It'll be fun."
Technology run amok
Okay, Sunlake athletic director Matt McDermott took the blame. When McDermott and former Zephyrhills coaching buddy Tom Fisher talked about exchanging scouting tapes, McDermott had some bad news.
He didn't have anything to hand Fisher from the Seahawks' 42-7 loss to St. Cloud. Sunlake used the wrong type of DVDs for its fancy new camcorder and didn't have a copy of the game to hand over. The solution: McDermott and Fisher traded scouting reports on the phone. Hey, it's better than nothing. e_SClBQuotable
"We took a team vote in the locker room after the Citrus game, and it was unanimous: We're going to show up."
- Central coach Cliff Lohrey on his team's game against Ridgewood on Friday, which has been hyped for the better part of the offseason.
Leftovers
- Zephyrhills junior Donterell Parker dislocated his elbow in the second half of Friday's football game. Coach Tom Fisher said he'll be out for a few weeks.
- Bishop McLaughlin's 28-0 loss was not all bad. Hurricanes junior Bobby Emmino forced four fumbles.
- Zephyrhills senior Josh Perkins finally returned from an injury that dogged him through the preseason. The 6-foot-6, 200-pounder notched three sacks in a 14-9 loss to Land O'Lakes. Perkins also plays receiver.
"This is the first time we really got to see him," Fisher said. "Hopefully he'll be here the rest of the year."
