IRC rolls despite delays
For Indian Rocks Christian, Saturday's football game against Winter Haven All Saints was easy. After all, the Golden Eagles cruised to a 27-8 victory.
It was getting there that was tough. The bus broke down on the way there Friday. Then a lightning delay postponed the game until the next day.
"We got back at midnight, then had to get up at 8 a.m. and head back," IRC coach Mark Buchanan said. "We were sluggish."
The Golden Eagles committed seven turnovers, including five lost fumbles. But IRC 2-1 overcame that, thanks to a strong rushing attack. Noah Smith scored on a 30-yard run, and Lou Mason and Ethan Englebert each had short rushing touchdowns.
Matt Oliphant also hit Ryan Mercado on a 7-yard pass to round out scoring for the Golden Eagles.
And they got to miss school
The East Lake boys golf team returned victorious after finishing first in its flight at the prestigious Hawkins Invitational in Sebring on Monday. The Eagles shot 312 in the Deer A flight, one of four divisions in the 45-team field, and edged Bartow in a one-hole playoff.
Indian Rocks Christian finished at 360, good for second place in the Turtle B flight.
East Lake's Nick Buccina fired a team-low 72 to tie for third overall. Teammates Terry O'Reilly (77) and Tommy Peterson (78) finished in ties for fifth and seventh, respectively.
