Typhoon lashes China
Associated Press
Published September 19, 2007
Typhoon Wipha slammed into China's coast south of Shanghai early today, flooding streets and fields and causing massive transport disruptions. One man was electrocuted. Shanghai, China's business hub, closed schools, ferries and other transport links after warnings the storm could be the strongest to hit the area in a decade and forecasts of torrential rains. Authorities had ordered 2-million people evacuated from ships, coastal regions and housing deemed unsafe. The typhoon, packing sustained winds of up to 100 mph and gusts up to 145 mph, landed near Cangnan in southern Zhejiang province, about 250 miles south of Shanghai. It was moving north along the coast at 35 mph and was expected to pass over Shanghai. On Tuesday, one worker was reported killed and another seriously injured as the fringe of the typhoon lashed Taiwan, its Disaster Relief Center reported. The deadliest storm to hit the China coast in recent years was Typhoon Winnie in 1997, which killed 236.
