Former county worker files for commission

Former Hernando County utilities employee Pamela Gaines, 51, prefiled paperwork Wednesday seeking the District 5 County Commission seat. "I've always been interested in politics. I've seen how the county works from the inside out," said Gaines, a Democrat. Gaines said her job was eliminated earlier this year as the county reorganized to meet state-mandated budget cuts. She worked briefly in the building department, then left. She also has worked for the Brooksville Housing Authority. Others prefilingfor the District 5 seat are incumbent Chris Kingsley, a Democrat, and Republican James Adkins.

Learn how to write your own life story
The University of South Florida's Learning in Retirement will offer Life Story Writing I, an eight-week course, 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 24 through Nov. 19, Southwest Florida Water Management District, 2379 Broad St., south of Brooksville. Students will learn how to put their life stories down on paper. Study group sessions will focus on childhood, family history, relationships, children, work (volunteer or paid), and personal sorrows and victories. The class is for beginners.
