YMCA is offering free week-long passes

Hernando County Family YMCA will offer Hernando County residents a complimentary one-week pass, Saturday through Sept. 29 as part of the YMCA America On the Move Week to encourage people to take small steps toward a healthier lifestyle.

For each activity one participates in during AOM Week, an entry ticket is completed and initialed by a YMCA staff member, then dropped into a "giant sneaker" in the lobby for a chance to win an eight-day, seven-night stay at the Vacation Villas at Fantasy World Resort in Orlando Dec. 1-8.

Landscape quilting class starts next week

Hernando County Recreation will offer Red Hat Quilters landscape quilting classes from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, starting next week at Delta Woods Park, 3400 Deltona Blvd.

The cost is $45 for five weeks, which does not include the cost of materials. The instructor is Helga Curtis.

PINE ISLAND

Once a month, park opens for a dog day Starting in October, dogs will be allowed one day a month at Alfred McKethan/Pine Island beach, 10800 Pine Island Drive.

Dog owners may bring their pets on leashes to the park on the first Saturday of each month, beginning Oct. 6.

Proof of current vaccinations will be required to enter. The cost is $5 per car or walk-up patron. Pets handlers will be responsible to pick up after them and to keep a leash on hand.

Jazz up Mondays with Roaring '20s lectures

Academia Hernando is now taking subscriptions for the upcoming lecture series on the Roaring '20s, also known as the Jazz Era.

Views of violence will hang on clotheslines

The Dawn Center of Hernando County, in conjunction with Pasco-Hernando Community College, will host the "Clothesline Project" at 10 a.m. Oct. 2 at the PHCC North Campus, 11415 Ponce de Leon Blvd.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the event is an effort to break the silence surrounding domestic and sexual violence. It will feature artwork created by survivors, using T-shirts as canvases.

The speaker will be Hernando County Judge Don Scaglione. Refreshments will be served. There is no cost to participate.

The Dawn Center serves women, men and children who are the victims of domestic and/or sexual violence. The center has a 24 hour crisis hotline and a secure, unlisted shelter location for victims. Outreach services, including individual advocacy, group sessions, legal advocacy and public speakers, are also available.

Run with the law and help out some kids

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office's seventh annual Run With the Sheriff 5K Challenge will be Nov. 3 at Central High School, 14075 Ken Austin Parkway.

The final check-in will be at 7 a.m., with the race starting promptly at 8 a.m. A kids "fun run" will immediately follow the 5K.

Awards will be given to overall first-place finishers in the male, female and masters categories, and for first, second and third place finishers in each five-year age group from ages 14 to 75-plus.

T-shirts will be given to all runners who advance register and medals will be awarded to all kids "fun run" participants.

The cost is $10 for advance registration and $15 on race day. All proceeds will benefit the sheriff's Youth Education Services, which assists in the funding of youth programs such as Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) and Gang Resistance Education And Training (GREAT), as well as other youth-based educational programs taught by Hernando County Sheriff's Office personnel in local schools.

Sponsorships are available from $100 to $300. Sponsorships include the company's logo on event T-shirts, complimentary race entries and goodie packets.

Tales of young heroes wanted for contest

Hernando County Sheriff Richard Nugent and his office invites youth ages 8 to 16 to enter the sheriff's "Kids Are Stars Too" essay contest.

Those interested can write, in 200 words or less, about a good deed or how they helped someone in the community this past summer. Examples include helping a neighbor, friend or relative, or volunteering time to do a good deed. All stories must be authentic and be able to be verified.

Rules and details of the essay contest will be published in the upcoming edition of Behind the Star, which will be an insert in local newspapers this Saturday. Behind the Star is a semi-annual newspaper publication of the Hernando County Sheriff's Office and is funded through drug forfeiture money.

The deadline for essay contest submissions is Oct. 19. The contest will be in three age groups: 8-10, 11-13, and 14-16. The winner of each group will receive a 20-inch color TV/VCR/DVD combo, courtesy of Wal-Mart Distribution Center. The winners' stories and pictures will be published in the March edition of Behind the Star and also will be featured on the Sheriff's Office Web site.

A Scouting event is planned for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Register Chevrolet, 14181 Cortez Blvd.

Boy and Girl Scout units will provide camping demonstrations, geology demonstrations, offer "Cub Grub" (snacks the youth make for themselves), fitness games and crafts. The Hernando County Sheriff's Department will offer child safety seminars and child IDs, and will have the sheriff's DARE car on hand. Youth attending can register to win a new bicycle.

Trap, turkey shootsat Sportsman's Club

The Hernando County Crime Stoppers will host the second benefit Trap Tournament and Turkey Shoot at 9 a.m. Sept. 29 at the Hernando Sportsman's Club grounds in the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area off U.S. 19, about 9.5 miles north of Cortez Boulevard.

The trap tournament includes three rounds and an elimination round, with 25 shots for each round. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The cost for those who preregister by Saturday is $35; the cost afterward is $50.

Participants must bring their own gun and ammunition and are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Lunch and awards will be provided.

Registration and shooting for the Turkey Shoot will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $4 per shot or $15 for four shots. Gun and ammunition are supplied; no experience is needed.

Sponsorships are also available from $100 to $500. A $500 sponsor will receive two shooter spots; a $250 sponsor will receive one shooter spot.

Health care providers can learn CPR-AED

A course in CPR/automated external defibrillator training and retraining for professional health care providers will be offered at 6 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Spring Hill Enrichment Center, 11375 Cortez Blvd. (behind Oak Hill Hospital).

The course is offered through the American Heart Association and will be given by instructor Bob Kanner, who is also a certified trainer with the American Safety and Health Institute. Upon completion of the class, students will receive a two-year certification card. The cost is $20.

Butterflies, reptiles, amphibians on show

Chinsegut Nature Center will host the following upcoming programs and events:

-Big Pine Fall Wildflower/Butterfly Walk, 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. Those participating are to meet at the Big Pine parking lot on Old Crystal River Road, north of Brooksville.

-Butterfly Workshop, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 29, presented by Mark Minno. Those attending should bring a pair of binoculars and a butterfly book, if you have them.

-Reptile and Amphibian Festival, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 6. The reptile and amphibian games and activities booth for children will be available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be reptile and amphibian exhibits, walks, talks and demonstrations. There will be a puppet show, frog-calling contest and door prizes. Visitors will learn about Florida's alligators and turtles and learn the difference between nonvenomous and venomous snakes.

There will also be a native plant exhibit. Food will be available for purchase, or bring your own.

Polish Harvest Festival features polka dance

The Polish Legion of American Veterans, Walter Weiss Memorial Post 196, will host its annual Polish Harvest Festival and Polka Dance, a traditional Polish celebration of Dozynki, Sept. 29 at VFW Post 10209, 15166 Spring Hill Drive.

Doors open with a cash bar about 3:45 p.m. A traditional harvest blessing and procession will begin about 4:45 p.m. Polish food will be available for purchase between 4 and 6 p.m, except during the procession and harvest blessing. Ethnic European and American dance music will be provided by Northern Sounds, a five-piece polka band.

Guests can bring their own snacks for the cocktail hour. However, no beverages of any kind are allowed to be brought to the hall.

Dozynki, which traces its origins back to 16th century Poland, is a celebration of the summer's harvest. The symbol of Dozynki is the Wieniec, or harvest wreath.
