BRANDON If you're an artist or craftsman, sign up for Kappa Kappa sorority's 33rd annual Brandon Arts and Crafts Festival. The event is Nov. 17 and Nov. 18 at Winthrop Town Centre on Bloomingdale Avenue. Registration is under way, and the fee is $70 for both days. That goes up to $80 after Nov. 1. BRANDON Community health fairto offer exhibits, tests The public is invited to a community health fair at Delaney Creek Lodge assisted living facility. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the facility, 320 S Lakewood Drive, Brandon. There will be more than 30 exhibits featuring educational information and free blood pressure readings, blood glucose screenings and other tests. Call 655-8858 for more information. Lions Club looking for 'Sidewalk Sale' items Donate your gently used items to the Brandon Lions Club for the "Sidewalk Sale." The sale is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Lions Club historic building at 610 Limona Road. It'll include doughnuts, hot dogs and other refreshments for sale, as well as lots of used treasures. There will also be a raffle for a handmade lamp shade. Call the Lions at 651-1010 for more information on how to donate and to arrange for pickup of large items. Chess tournament open to kids in grade school Pint-sized chess players will square off Sunday at a tournament at Brandon Center Place, 619 Vonderburg Drive. It's open to kids in kindergarten through fifth grade and starts at 1:30 p.m. Team and individual trophies will be awarded. The event is open to the first 60 participants. Rec Center to provide square dance lessons Swing your partner and do-si-do during Thursday night square dance lessons at the Brandon Recreation Center. Lessons are sponsored by the Bay Area Twirlers Square Dance Club, and a new session starts Thursday night. The first session is free, and after that it's $4. BRANDON/SEFFNER Book-signings to help ill teen, fund library A local author is using two upcoming book-signing events to raise money for charity. Debora Coty's novel The Distant Shore is described as "inspirational historic fiction" for young adults. The story focuses on a young girl who discovers a dark family secret. It's set in 1904 and features religious as well as historic, adventure and romance themes. - Coty's Sept. 28 book signing at the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center will include a fundraiser for Brett Reed, a Brandon teen battling Fredrick's ataxia, a debilitating neurological disease. The event is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the center, 405 Beverly Blvd. Proceeds will go toward aquatic therapy. - An Oct. 10 signing at the Seffner/Mango Library will benefit a new library to be built on Kingsway Avenue. That event starts at 6:30 p.m. at the current library, 11724 E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Seffner. Coty lives in Seffner and her work has appeared in more than 70 publications. RIVERVIEW Methodist church will stage two fundraisers Riverview United Methodist Church has two community events coming up to raise money for charitable and mission needs. The first is a fabric sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Seamstresses, tailors, crafters or anyone who uses fabric can browse through a variety of knits, denims, linens and suit material priced from $1 to $3 a piece. On Oct. 13, the church will hold its annual Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event includes children's games, crafts, food and inflatable rides. Here's a chance So you think you can dance? Even if you can't, come out and learn some new steps at the Academy of Dance Club open house 7 p.m. Sunday at the Sun City Center community hall. Admission is free and open to the public. Instructors Bernice and Art May will present demonstrations of the rumba, cha-cha and other ballroom dances, as well as a dance lesson and refreshments.
