FORT LAUDERDALE

Floridians are pessimistic about the economy but confident in themselves, according to an August survey of Florida workers by Spherion, a Fort Lauderdale-based recruiting and staffing firm. Spherion's report released Friday found that fewer workers - 16 percent, compared with the previous month's 26 percent - believe the economy is strengthening. But 70 percent are confident in their own ability to find a new job, an increase of 10 percentage points.

US Airways pilots get sick en masse

US Airways Group Inc., in talks for a new pilot contract, said it canceled 30 flights Friday after pilots called in sick at about six times the usual rate. About 110 pilots called in sick, an increase from 15 to 20 on a normal day, spokeswoman Andrea Rader said. Most of the cancellations were on the airline's northeastern U.S. shuttle, and passengers were notified in advance and moved to other flights, she said.

Subprime buyers denied assistance

Subprime borrowers with adjustable- rate mortgages aren't getting the help they need from banks to make their payments more affordable, according to Moody's Investors Service. One percent of U.S. subprime mortgages with interest rates that began to adjust in January, April and July were modified to help homeowners avoid default, the New York-based debt-rating firm said in a statement Friday. Moody's surveyed 16 servicers that managed $950-billion of subprime mortgages, or roughly 80 percent of the market.

Dollar hits new low against the euro

The dollar hit a new low against the seemingly unstoppable euro Friday as the 13-nation currency broke through $1.41. The euro's ascension renewed calls from French President Nicolas Sarkozy for the European Central Bank to follow the Federal Reserve and cut interest rates, which would help keep French exports competitive.
