NEW PORT RICHEY - The Spongers scored on their first play from scrimmage and cruised against the Royal Knights. After the 80-yard reverse pass from the Spongers' Danny Reyes to Harolambas Vavlas, the Royal Knights had opportunities to get back in it but spoiled their chances. The Spongers led 16-0 at halftime and breezed to a 3-0 start. "Our kids played hard and battled," River Ridge coach Tim Stevens said. "(Tarpon Springs) is a big, physical group. We knew we couldn't make any mistakes." Early in the second quarter, Mike Disparti intercepted a pass from Reyes, but on the next play, the Royal Knights (1-3) turned the ball over on a fumble. In the third quarter, Tarpon Springs fumbled the ball on its first drive, but two plays later, River Ridge gave the ball back on its second of three interceptions.
