Renee Baseman, wife of Rabbi Arthur Baseman of Temple B'nai Israel in Clearwater, is a mental health therapist for Gulfcoast Jewish Family Services, as well as an educator at Temple B'nai Israel Religious School. This year, she is teaching a ninth-grade class on sex, drugs and Judaism.

What is on your nightstand?

Blue Shoes and Happiness by Alexander McCall Smith and Queen's Fool by Philippa Gregory.

Alexander McCall Smith is known for his female protagonists. Did that draw you to him?

Yes, I did want to see how a male writer dealt with female protagonists. I've always enjoyed him, since the first books of his I read, The Kalahari Typing School for Men and Friends, Lovers, Chocolate. It seems like now I automatically pick up his books. Regarding Queen's Fool, I picked it up because the cover was very Elizabethan and also because I knew it was about a Jewish girl who fled the Inquisition in Spain. I recommend both authors.
