  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

9-year-old raises $510 for homeless charity

ST. PETERSBURG - As a member of the Fossil Park All-Stars baseball team, 9-year-old Michael Guidice had experience raising money to get to state and national tournaments, but something else was on his mind.

"I want to help out homeless kids," he said. "I feel sorry about them, that I have parents and sisters and toys, and they have no home or moms or dads or anything."

Earlier this month, Michael got busy washing cars. Since, with a little help from his mother, Kris, and his sisters, 8-year-old Cheyanne and 6-year-old Caitlyn, he washed more than 20. Joseph Vaccaro, a cousin in New Jersey, offered to match the money and sent a check for $240 to the family this week.

"Altogether, he's made $510 in just two weeks," a proud Kris Guidice said of Michael.

The fourth-grader at Lynch Elementary School made an appointment to present the donation to ASAP Homeless Services last Friday.

TOM, reputable organizations should have an annual (or every 2 years) independent financial audit. You should be able to walk in the door and nicely say, "I'm interested in your organization, will you share your financial information with me?"

With "homeless advocacy" becoming such a big business now with so many groups out there where can you obtain detailed financial audits on them before turning over large sums of money ?
