Actor to speak at Boys & Girls Clubs gala

Lou Gossett Jr. will be featured at the awards event.

He is known for some tough-guy roles, but Lou Gossett Jr. has a soft spot for underdogs.

The award-winning actor who has portrayed distinctive characters in works ranging from Roots to An Officer and a Gentleman to Stargate SG-1 will be the keynote speaker at the annual alumni awards gala for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast on Oct. 13.

The black-tie event will honor Boys & Girls Clubs alumni Emery M. Ivery, vice president of community and partnership development for United Way of Tampa Bay; Frank W. Crum Jr., president and chief executive of FrankCrum of Largo; and Jai Hinson, founder and artistic director of Life Force Cultural Arts Academy inClearwater.

The organization serves youngsters through age 17 through a variety of after-school activities that help them develop special skills and talents.
