Largo Mixed paper can now go curbside

Effective October 1st, Largo residents will be able to recycle newspaper, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, shredded paper, cereal-type food boxes, phone books, shoe boxes and other mixed paper products in their blue curbside recycling bin. But they won't be able to recycle glass at curbside anymore.

The city has decided to replace curbside glass recycling collection with mixed paper. The decision was made based on research and feedback from resident surveys that found that mixed paper is the largest portion of the city's waste stream; glass and cardboard ranked lowest. City officials say that drop-off mixed paper recycle bins are collecting and recycling over 20 tons of mixed paper per month which can be recycled locally, but glass must be transported to Sarasota for recycling. Residents may still recycle their glass at both 24-hour drop-off centers.

For more information on drop-off locations or to request a recycle bin, residents may visit www.largorecycles.com or call the City of Largo Solid Waste Division at 587-6760.
